Author Q&A

What inspired you to write your first book?

I was inspired to become a writer by my dad, Jomo Gamal Thomas, who is an intellectual property, business and real estate lawyer, and the founder of his law firm, J.G. Thomas & Associates, P.C. in Valley Stream. My dad has done some writing of his own, authoring "100 Richest Hispanic Americans Report" published by Latino Money Magazine and "The Black Millionaire Next Door: Black Wealth 2003," a special report, published in the Black Wealth and Fortunes Magazine.

I wanted to follow in my father's footsteps. I wrote my first book, "Super Happy Kid Defeats the Angry" at the time of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021. I was 4 years old.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

I hope to help young kids learn to control their emotions by reading my children's books. I know that self-awareness and self-control aré important for all people, especially kids. I want more kids to be able to understand their emotions and learn to control their emotions. I hope to share my stories and experiences to help other kids.

I was motivated to write stories about emotions because I am getting better at managing my emotions and I want to teach other kids the same skills and coping suggestions. I believe that emotional intelligence is a super power that helps kids to succeed by managing their emotions. I am really proud that the Angry Vacuum was the number one best seller for Amazon in Children's Classic Literature new ebooks releases.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

I finished writing the "Critical Critters" book. This book is part of my emotional intelligence book series for children with Sid and Laura, the two superheroes teaching coping skills to manage emotions. In the "Critical Critters" story, gifted children are overwhelmed by "critical critters"-negative emotions in their minds. With the help of a special device, the Emotions Detector, Laura and Sid have to find a way to help the kids combat these critters and learn the importance of positive self-talk.

Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?

I love Dave Pilkey's "Dog Man" book series, and I even started designing my own comics, about "mini-A.I. robots," that were inspired by the series. I am still working on writing books, but I might branch into comic books, comic strips, and animated movies in the future.

Who designed the covers?

My dad illustrated my books. He also helped create the character of Laura the Emotions Explorer.

How do you relax?

I am homeschooled, and I have been since the age of two, by Clifton Academy, a private practice that offers in person or virtual learning. I take time to relax by drawing, writing, meditating, swimming and boxing. I also enjoy learning new languages Mandarin and Hebrew. I am always finding new challenges. For the past three years, I have been enrolled in Hofstra University's Gifted Youth Program, as well as Fordham University's Reading Institute Program.
