Author Q&A

What inspired you to write your first book?

The inspiration for Raising Future Leaders stems from my deep passion for psychology, neuroscience, and parenting, and a relentless drive to empower fathers who are not just striving for excellence in their careers, but also in their roles as parents. As a father of two sons, I've walked the tightrope of managing high responsibilities at work while ensuring I'm present and impactful at home. This book is my response to the very real challenge that many high-achieving fathers face: how to cultivate excellence in their children while navigating the demands of a demanding career.

I realized that while there are countless resources available for parents, few speak directly to the unique needs of fathers who are managing businesses, leading teams, or holding significant responsibilities. These fathers, who are driven to achieve greatness in their professional lives, often want the same level of success for their children but struggle to find the time or resources to make it happen.

Raising Future Leaders combines the latest research in psychology and neuroscience with practical strategies tailored for fathers who are committed to raising high-achieving children. My goal with this book is to provide a roadmap for these fathers, offering insights that help them foster resilience, confidence, and leadership in their children, all while maintaining their own pursuit of excellence.

How did you come up with the title?

The title Raising Future Leaders: How to Turn Tiny Tyrants into Titans was carefully chosen to encapsulate the transformative journey I want this book to guide fathers through. Raising Future Leaders speaks to the ultimate goal of preparing our children to succeed and lead with confidence and integrity. The subtitle, How to Turn Tiny Tyrants into Titans, adds a playful yet powerful touch, highlighting the process of shaping our children's strong wills and personalities into traits that will serve them well as they grow into leaders. Together, the title and subtitle capture the essence of empowering fathers to guide their children from challenging behaviors to becoming resilient and capable leaders of tomorrow.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

Absolutely. One of the core messages of Raising Future Leaders is the importance of investing time efficiently during your child's early years. It's a common misconception that a parent's input isn't as necessary during childhood, especially during those critical years when careers often demand more attention. However, this thinking is flawed. Children learn a great deal by observing and emulating their parents. When parents are absent or overly focused on work, it can unintentionally send the message that their children are less of a priority, which may discourage them from adopting the same work ethic and drive.

The truth is, the time you invest in your children during their formative years is irreplaceable. It's when they develop their core values, their understanding of responsibility, and their sense of self-worth. By being present and engaged, even if it's in short, high-quality interactions, you demonstrate the balance of hard work and family commitment. This not only strengthens your bond but also instills in your children the work ethic and values that will guide them throughout their lives. In Raising Future Leaders, I emphasize strategies for high-achieving parents to manage this balance effectively, ensuring that their children grow up with the inspiration and tools to become future leaders themselves.

What are your current projects?

I'm excited to share several upcoming projects that focus on empowering high-achieving fathers. First, I'm launching a YouTube channel called The Corporate Dad in September. This channel is specifically designed for fathers in the corporate world, using a language they're familiar with but infused with a touch of humor. It's all about helping dads balance their professional success with being present and effective parents, making the journey of fatherhood both rewarding and fun.

Next, I'm thrilled to announce my upcoming book, Parenting for Dads: No Manual Required (But This Helps)-The Must-Have Guide to Kickstart Fatherhood with the Right Mindset and a Smile. This book is packed with practical advice and insights, delivered in a humorous tone that makes navigating the challenges of fatherhood a bit lighter and a lot more enjoyable.

Finally, I'm developing a series of courses aimed at providing actionable strategies for busy parents who want to nurture their children's development without sacrificing their careers. These courses will cover everything from time management to fostering leadership skills in children, all grounded in the latest psychological and neuroscientific research.

To stay updated on these projects and more, I encourage everyone to subscribe and stay tuned through my website, TheCorporateDad.ca. You can also follow me on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/nam/ to connect and keep up with my latest work.

What behind-the-scenes tidbit in your life would probably surprise your readers the most?

One thing that might surprise my readers is that my family and I don't have a TV or any TV subscriptions at home. Instead of watching television, I spend my downtime immersed in a diverse mix of reading material. My focus includes world news, the global economy, U.S. politics, technology trends, business developments, investment trends, as well as scientific research, academic reviews, and news from the academic world. It's an unusual mix, but it allows me to stay informed across various fields, keeping up with the latest discoveries, trends, and opportunities. This approach helps me continuously learn and maintain a broad perspective, which is essential for both my personal growth and my work. By avoiding the distractions of TV, I can be more intentional with my time and set a strong example for my kids about the importance of lifelong learning and staying informed.

Who is the most supportive person in your life when it comes to your writing?

Without a doubt, the most supportive person in my life when it comes to my writing is my wife. She's incredibly busy herself, managing both a cabinet practice and hospital work as a general physician. Despite her demanding schedule, she's always there to encourage and support me.

What makes our partnership work, especially with both of us leading such intense lives, is not just clear communication and setting expectations, but also managing our energy levels throughout the day. We've had to become very intentional about how we allocate our energy, ensuring that we're both highly efficient and focused during work hours, but also maintaining enough energy to be fully present with our kids in the evening. It's a constant balancing act-being intense and productive at work while ensuring we don't run out of steam for family time. Her understanding and support make it possible for me to pursue my writing while we both navigate the challenges of our demanding careers and family life.

What was the hardest part of writing your author bio?

The hardest part of writing my author bio was deciding how to weave together the various roles I've played over the years-coach, strategic advisor, business consultant, and parent-into a cohesive narrative. Each of these experiences has shaped my approach to parenting and leadership, and I wanted my bio to reflect the depth and breadth of this journey.

Balancing the technical expertise from my background in psychology and neuroscience with the practical wisdom gained from coaching and consulting was a particular challenge. I needed to ensure that my bio didn't just list my credentials but also communicated how these diverse experiences contribute to the insights I share in Raising Future Leaders. My goal was to create a bio that not only establishes my authority but also connects with readers on a personal level, showing them that I understand the challenges of balancing a demanding career with the responsibilities of parenting. Ultimately, I aimed to craft a bio that reflects the unique blend of strategic thinking and hands-on experience that I bring to the table.

What is your favorite time to write, and why?

As much as I'd love to have a set time to write, the reality of managing kids and a career means that traditional writing schedules often go out the window. Instead, I've adapted to finding moments of inspiration throughout the day. I brainstorm, reflect, and even prewrite passages while I'm otherwise busy-during my commute, while meal prepping, or even during shower time. These pockets of time allow me to stay mentally engaged with my writing projects, even when life gets hectic. It's not about waiting for the perfect moment; it's about making the most of the moments I have. This approach allows me to weave my writing into the fabric of my daily life, ensuring that my ideas are always evolving, even if I'm not sitting at a desk.
