Amparo Sard in her studio on Mallorca, Spain

Amparo Sard in her studio on Mallorca, Spain

The exhibition "ALIENATION" by Amparo Sard will open online today. The digital show includes eleven new artworks by the Spanish artist: artworks made of recycled plastic, a sculpture made of perforated aluminium, artworks made of synthetic resin and perforated paper works. The digital exhibition is replacing the planned at Kronberg Castle near Frankfurt due to Corona-restrictions. It is supported by the “Mobility Grant 2020” of the Spanish organization Acción Cultural Española (AC/E).

Amparo Sard was born in Son Servera, Mallorca, in 1976. She studied Philosophy and Art at University of Barcelona. In 2000, she won the Deutsche Bank "Identity" art competition. Since then, she has shown her works in more than 30 solo exhibitions in galleries and museums worldwide, and her works are part of many public collections. In 2018, she was recognised as one of the 15 most important artists by the Dutch LXRY organisation. She lives and works on Mallorca. She holds a doctorate in Philosophy and teaches as a professor at University of Barcelona.

In her work, Amparo Sard investigates the function of human consciousness and the image with a special focus on today’s era of technology. She aims to create tension for the viewer by bringing up two sides of an image, the white and the black, the obvious and the hidden. The artist explains: "For me, the transcendent image is an image with two interpretations, two indivisible halves".

Her new series "Selfies in India" is inspired by her trip to India, during which she helped to start new schools in spring of this year. Many children asked her to take a picture together: a selfie. She also saw large amounts of plastic in the rivers that killed animals. In her new series, she therefore used a new material: recycled bags in different colours, deviating from her usual black and white colour scheme. "For the new series, I used selfies as a critique of mass behaviour. A moment compressed in seconds of a life in which we do not realise the tremendous reality that surrounds us", says Amparo Sard.

The portraits are also deformed with 3D holes, something that can be seen in her work from the very beginning. "The holes help me to connect everything: break the image and hint at its most sinister meaning. The image that remains recognisable acts as a metaphor for me", she explains. "I am also working with artspace NEXUS on the idea of digital art and new developments with IT specialists."

The independent artspace NEXUS was founded by artists Raphael Brunk and Bernhard Adams as well as art historian Dr Ruth Polleit Riechert and IT-Expert Philipp Brückner in 2019. It gives artists the opportunity to present their artworks digitally to reach new audiences worldwide.

The digital exhibition will be online until September 24, 2020, at www.rpr-art.com/Nexus
