Safety in student exchanges: Immigration countries like Australia are used to new faces

Student exchanges work with suitable people and suitable hosts

Lohmar, 07.03.24. Openness and hospitality are the starting points for a year abroad. With good hosts and young people who are prepared to invest - time, effort, emotion, money - the student exchange project works.

EVERYTHING new in the year abroad

1-2% of a year group of pupils from Germany, aged between 14 and 18, spend a year abroad at a school. They build a new life, make new friends and integrate into a foreign school routine. Unfamiliar everyday things, food, a school system without a class system, a different language 24 hours a day: there is a lot to master.

Student exchanges in immigration countries with a welcoming culture

The exchange students master everything new also because their chosen destination country is often a country of immigration or home to world explorers. In Australia, for example, 30% of the population are immigrants, in New Zealand 28%, and the culture is welcoming and open to newcomers. The whole world wants to learn English, and the countries where this is possible - Great Britain, Ireland and Scotland, through to Canada, the USA, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa - can all look back on a practiced approach to newcomers.

Guests receive a warm and experienced welcome. The Spanish-speaking or European destinations are also experienced in welcoming young people from abroad. The exchange organization international EXPERIENCE e.V. advises young people and parents on which program is suitable for whom.

You can't get any closer: host families and exchange students do a lot

Those who make an active effort to speak the language and adapt to basic things are given a helping hand. They are happy and proud to show off local customs. Host families integrate their newcomer and accept the time commitment. The contribution to living costs that guest students almost always have to make can only partially compensate for the host parents' worries, the care, many car journeys and long conversations.

Host families do it for exactly the same reasons as the young people: A sense of adventure, pride, curiosity and open-mindedness. They are delighted that exchange students have chosen their country to attend school and get to know the culture. They take them to their favorite places, serve them typical dishes and introduce them to the subtleties of the language, with idioms and meanings that only a "local" understands.

With a mindset that is polite, unreserved and helpful, student exchange hosts make an effort to integrate their exchange student and go to some lengths to do so. They will probably attend a game of the local national sport, e.g. a rugby match in New Zealand. Or absolute beginners will be patiently introduced to water sports in Australia if they want to try them.

Exchange students receive support from their host family

It is these experiences that fill the exchange students with joy and pride, because with this kind of support, it is easier for them to get involved in something completely new than they had expected at home. They have learned to approach the unknown and to adapt.

Exchange students think positively

The novelty is often what makes student exchanges so appealing. This is all the more appealing when a guest student can approach others openly and without reservation. Thinking well of each other, listening well and being able to ask good questions quickly brings host and guest closer together. Unfiltered experiences, namely personal contact with real people, show what is really behind a culture. Without image retouching and staged photos, but through direct shared experience. Openness and adaptability can be practiced at international EXPERIENCE e. V. in the preparatory seminar and give self-confidence for the exchange year.
