Doubling the pace in student exchange, continuing into 2024: The clock is ticking

Lohmar, 31.12.23 – Who has turned the hands of time? Student exchange is meant for individuals who can adeptly manage varying concepts of time. “Suddenly, time seems to flow at double its usual speed,” as most returnees often express about their sojourn abroad when they share their experiences at the returnees' meeting hosted by the student exchange organization, International EXPERIENCE e. V.

Being well-aware of the definite commencement and closure of a student exchange heightens one’s sense of fleeting time. By the middle of January, the first wave of returnees arrive back home, having endeavored to seize every moment since August to its maximum.

Adapting to a host family, building friendships at a new school, and living every aspect of life in a foreign language - these are the daunting tasks that several thousand German youths abroad are currently tackling. These efforts and focused dedication make time seem to fly. Exchange students also undergo an emotionally rich period: New friendships made, farewells given, homesickness felt, routine adjusted, habits developed, and eventually, a new worldview acquired, altogether filling their hearts and minds to the brim.

2024 surely holds the same for incoming exchange students abroad: Most youths are enrolled in another school for 10 months, thus, they commence a new school semester at the end of January with renewed subjects. Relationships are deepened, and host families begin to feel like home.

For 2024, we wish all participants and their families an intentional experience of time, and to perpetually cherish the memories thereof.
