EuroGeoSurveys-The Geological Surveys of Europe

EuroGeoSurveys-The Geological Surveys of Europe

EuroGeoSurveys (EGS) will be holding its 50th anniversary event in October 2022. The event celebrates the long collaboration between 37 European geological surveys with an overall workforce of several thousand experts, which make up the membership of EGS. During this time, the Geological Surveys of Europe have been working together to deliver geoscientific knowledge and data to the EU institutions to support policy making for the benefit of society.

The collaboration between Geological Surveys has been providing pan-European development of harmonised data on topics such as subsurface resources, sustainable urban development, environmental and waste management and natural geohazards since 1971. During the anniversary celebration events, EuroGeoSurveys will honour their past work and look to the future as they continue to collaborate in developing a path towards a Geological Service for Europe.

A Call to Young Geoscientists - What is the Future of Collaborative Geoscience in Europe?
On the theme of collaboration for the anniversary celebrations, EGS is inviting young geoscientists based in Europe to share their opinions on how they see collaboration in European geoscience in the future. These ideas should be shared in a one-minute video abstract. The winning entry will receive funding to attend the 50th anniversary event on the 27th of October and the opportunity to deliver a ten-minute presentation to industry, political and geoscientific leaders from Europe and beyond. About EuroGeoSurveys: EuroGeoSurveys (EGS), The Geological Surveys of Europe, is a not-for-profit organisation representing 37 National Geological Surveys and some regional Surveys in Europe, an overall workforce of several thousand experts. EuroGeoSurveys members, the National Geological Surveys, are public sector institutions carrying out operations and research in the field of geosciences. These organisations have a long tradition, in many cases more than 100 years, in collecting data, preparing information and conducting research focused on their national subsurface.

History of EuroGeoSurveys: In 1970 the Directors of several national Geological Surveys in Europe developed the idea of forming an association to promote the important role of geoscience in all aspects of everyday life in Europe. The first network of the European Geological Surveys was established in Orléans, France in 1971 with the foundation of the Western European Geological Surveys (WEGS). In 1992 WEGS published its first co-ordinated and comprehensive statement on behalf of its 21 members, entitled 'Geology and the Environment in Western Europe'. By the early to mid-1990s, interest had grown within central and eastern Europe to become more involved in this collaborative platform and soon there were 30 members in what was now known as the Forum of European Geological Surveys (FOREGS). In 1995, EuroGeoSurveys (EGS) was officially registered as a non-profit international association and the rest, as they say, is history!
