EU Commissioner Jan Figel (right) in discussion about Intel Teach

At the high-level European EMINENT Conference in Brussels, held from Dec 06-07 2007, EU Commissioner Ján Figel, responsible for Education, Training, Culture and Youth, stressed the importance of a methodological approach in Professional Development for Teachers. “Digital Competence is a pre-requisite to learn learning” he said in front of over 250 delegates from around the world. “Learning to learn is a crucial competence for teachers, who are the most critical factor in bringing ICT to the classroom”.
Thomas Osburg, K12 Education Manager for Europe, Middle East and Africa stressed the importance of the relation to NGOs like the EU: “For long time, we collaborate with relevant bodies of the EU in various partnerships, like this EMINENT conference and eLearning Award, in order to maximize the impact of the Professional Development for Teacher in a collaborative effort.” Commissioner Figel complimented Intel on it’s engagement in Education and the professionalism of the programs.
Martina Roth, Director for Global Education Strategy confirmed this in the discussion held with the Commissioner after the keynote: “The focus needs to be on pedagogy, not on the tools only. Intel Teach, as one of the largest Public-Private Partnerships in Education is providing this pedagogy in over 40 countries as of today and has reached nearly 5 Million teachers.”
After previous conferences in Amsterdam, Lisbon, Stockholm, Geneva, Prague and Paris, this year’s EMINENT had as its theme political priorities for education and the role of technology. Commissioner Figel’ and invited ministers of education commented on EU political priorities for schooling and this set the scene for two days’ discussions on those priorities and the initiatives, products and support that make innovation in schools happen on a large scale. International cooperation was a major strand of the conference and representatives from a number of international networks joined and shared their work.
