iversity – Education. Online. Free.

Bernau, 18 September 2013 – For the first time, ECTS credits will be granted for Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). iversity, a platform for academic online teaching, is taking this unprecedented step in cooperation with the University of Osnabrück and the Lübeck University of Applied Sciences.

Prof. Oliver Vornberger, Ars Legendi laureate (a prestigious German prize for teaching excellence) and e-learning expert at the University of Osnabrück, will offer the MOOC “Algorithms and Data Structures” in the summer term 2014. In mid-October 2013, Prof. Marc Opresnik, from Lübeck University of Applied Sciences (FH Lübeck), will launch his course “Fundamentals of Marketing”. Students who pass an on-campus exam after taking these online courses will be granted credit points in accordance with the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS).

FH Lübeck is the first university to award ECTS credit points for courses taken on iversity. “FH Lübeck is one of the leading German universities in the field of e-learning. By producing a MOOC, we live up to our educational mission and facilitate access to higher education for a broader audience, especially professionals and parents”, states Prof. Marc Opresnik, explaining his university’s commitment.

“Certifying MOOCs with ECTS credits is a crucial step in seizing the potential of online teaching and integrating it into universities’ daily business. What we are seeing now is only the beginning of a revolution that offers previously unimagined possibilities to improve university education online”, says Prof. Oliver Vornberger.

In addition, iversity is planning to grant ECTS credits for further online courses in cooperation with professors and universities. iversity currently offers more than 20 MOOCs taught by professors from Germany, Europe and worldwide. The disciplines range from medicine, computer science, business studies, physics and law to design and philosophy: iversity.org/courses

“In the context of the Bologna Process there has been a lot of discussion about student mobility. By providing ECTS credits for MOOCs, we are taking a huge step ahead in making this vision come true. Now students don’t have to switch between universities anymore. Instead, the universities come to them”, says Marcus Riecke, iversity’s CEO.
