Lead School JMA Pilani Expert Talk on Stress Management by USA Psychiatrist Dr Asha Mishra

Of all the toxins in the world, stress might be one of the most damaging. If left untreated, it may lead to chronic inflammation, hypertension, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, obesity and much more. Dr Asha Mishra is board certified adult and geriatric psychiatrist, currently working as part time consulting Psychiatrist for Chesterfield County HRM. She was Medical Director at Chesterfield County Mental Health Clinic until retirement in 2019. She had also been Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Dr Asha Mishra gave a soul filling talk on Stress Management to the teachers of JMA Pilani on 02 Oct 2021 a date which also marks Gandhi Jayanti and International Day of Non-Violence. It is undeniable that COVID 19 Pandemic has added stress to the agony of one and all.

Beginning her talk with stress and distress, Dr Asha pointed out that the brain is hard-wired with an alarm system to handle disturbances to bring the body back to normal relaxed state by releasing hormones like adrenaline etc. Unfortunately, the nonstop complications of modern life mean that some people's alarm system never shuts off and they never get to the relaxed state. Highlighting the Illness Wellness Continuum, she explained the effects of prolonged stress on mind, body, emotions and behaviors.

Symptoms of stress may include chest pain, rapid heartbeat, headaches, fatigue, insomnia, muscle or joint pain, increased or decreased appetite and sex drive, and or overwhelming feelings of anxiety, sadness, or irritability. The talk focused on the benefits of stress management including the techniques to manage stress. Once the triggers leading to stress are identified, strategies can be made to eliminate the stress. Asking for help from family, friends and experts is not a sign of weakness but of strength.

The key to stress management is maintaining a healthy lifestyle, eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, getting a sound sleep, cutting down time spent on gadgets and get on to common relaxation techniques like meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, Tai chi and yoga. The talk was followed by an interesting round of question answer session. Principal Mrs Booma Natarajan thanked Dr Asha Mishra for the talk and Chairman Dr Suman Mishra for being a constant source of inspiration for the school.
