JMA Pilani Marks Guru Purnima with FDP by Banasthali Professor on Transformation of a Good Teacher to Great

Every Ram Rahim Robert in India today talks about Right to Education - RTE but forgets that the right to education means the right to quality education which, in turn, implies the right to quality teachers. Quality teacher does not mean qualified teacher but also those who have the characteristics: knowledge, skills, right attitude and passion. No one has doubt that Education can be transformed only by educating the educator, and not merely by creating a new pattern, a new system of action, etc.

JMA invites experts from top raking institutions which include Banasthali Vidyapith, Birla Institute of Technology and Science and Oxford University Press India to conduct various Teacher Quality Enhancement Workshops. For 2020 to mark Guru Purnima, JMA Pilani invited Prof BR Natarajan from Banasthali to conduct a workshop on Transformation of a Good Teacher to Great.

Prof Natarajan began his session on Zoom with shloka “Na Guror-Adhikam Tattvam Na Guror-Adhikam Tapah, Tattva-Jnyaanaat Param Naasti Tasmai Shrii-Gurave Namah” and described the role of the teacher including the reverse of Guru Dakshina in terms of 14 Things Teacher Owes his / her Students including the Zone of Proximal Development ZPD. After giving salient features of 5 Perspectives on Teaching namely Transmission (Knowledge), Apprenticeship (Skills), Developmental (Abilities), Nurturing (Attitudes) and Social Reform (Values), the focus shifted to Philosophy of Teaching.

After explaining the 10 Characteristics which makes a Highly Effective Learning Environment including an overview of Bloom’s Taxonomy, the discussion shifted to student Perceptions of a Good and Bad Teacher. Prof Natarajan pointed out that to be a good teacher one must know the 10 ways which makes a teacher mediocre and explained the concept of tiering – scaffolding. .After a virtual snack break, the session had focus on 25 Things Successful Teachers Do Differently and 10 ways for A Good Teacher to Become Great.

Giving an overview of Time Management with the Important Urgent matrix, Prof Natarajan explained the four important things for a teacher to learn from Bhagavad Gita namely Listen to the students, Satiate the hunger of inquisitive minds, Answer with validation and reasoning and Build a trust relationship with students. The session concluded with the first and last shloka of Bhagavad Gita and its significance.
