Banasthali Journalism and Mass Communication Department Celebrates World Photography Day

The significance of the day is enhanced when none other than American multinational technology company Apple CEO Tim Cook tweets and shares stunning iPhone photos which included highly acclaimed Indian Wildlife photographer Varun Aditya photo to mark the World Photography Day. This day has its beginning from the invention of the Daguerreotype, a photographic process developed by Frenchmen Louis Daguerre and Joseph Nicephore Niepce in 1837 which was announced to the world at large on 09 Jan 1839 by the French Academy of Sciences.

On 19 August 1839, the French government took possession of the photographic process patent and made a magnanimous gesture of gifting the invention “free to the world”. Until a few years back taking autographs of famous personalities including Bollywood and Hollywood film stars was considered the in thing and today those very personalities and film stars are happy to take and oblige selfie requests. However, the first ever selfie is said to have been clicked in 1839 by American Robert Cornelius who set his camera up, took the image by removing the lens cap and then literally running into the frame.

The first durable colour photograph though not of a great quality is said to have been taken by Thomas Sutton in 1861 which was actually a set of three black and white photographs taken through red, green and blue filters. Today digital photographs are the in thing and the first digital photograph is said to have been shot in 1957 by American engineer Russel A Kirsch almost two decades before the iconic Kodak came up with the first digital camera.

To mark World Photography Day, on 19 Aug 2019, the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication Banasthali organized an exhibition of photographs shot by various students depicting different moods, seasons, lifestyles, campus life, festivals, wildlife, sunrise, sunset, Femininity and much more. The exhibition attracted all photo crazy enthusiasts among the over 16000 students spread across the 850 acre campus. A passion packed amateur photographer himself, Prof BR Natarajan Head of Chemical Engineering Department Banasthali was invited to inaugurate the photography exhibition.

Addressing the students and faculty, Prof Natarajan congratulated them for rising to the occasion and had an interactive session in which he shared details of origin of the day as well selfies, colour photography and digital photography etc. He also shared the quote that after everything is gone, only two things remain – one memory and other photographs. After several rounds of group photographs, It goes without saying that students and faculty who visited the Photography Exhibition left with beaming faces and pride that they were indeed part of an institution which is a shining jewel in the crown among the institutions not only in India today but across the globe.
