Talk on Soft Skills for Success for Banasthali Sophomores

According to Alex McClafferty who failed 'Introduction to Java’ in his first year of college and gave up software engineering for good, co-founded a successful WordPress support service for which he has credited soft skills as the secret.

Six soft skills which are a must to face tough competition are Empathy, Negotiation, Public Speaking, Relationship Building, Leadership and Time Management. Further, the placement prospects of students graduating from institutions very much depend on their personalities measured in terms of motivation, aptitude and attitude.

While Sympathy is feeling compassion or commiseration for another person, Empathy which is the number one soft skill is when one can project himself or herself into the other person and feel what the other person is feeling.

To develop empathy one must listen more and talk less as well as ask thoughtful and probing questions that draw out implications and feelings. Exposure to Philosophy helps in developing not only empathy but also communication skills, critical reasoning skills, and general problem-solving skills.

Negotiation is a conflict to work towards an agreement and first time negotiators should keep in mind the famous quote of John F Kennedy who had thundered “Let us never negotiate out of fear. But let us never fear to negotiate”.

Public speaking is undeniably a much desired soft skill and to become a successful public speaker, one must craft an interesting story as well as accept some degree of nervousness and discomfort. It goes without saying that a flair for history aids in crafting an interesting story.

Life is a cobweb of human relationships which makes relationship building an important soft skill. A well known quote puts leader as one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way and it goes without saying that travel planning aids in developing leadership skills. When it comes to time management, students must recall the quote of Dwight D. Eisenhower which goes as “What is important is seldom urgent and what is urgent is seldom important.”

Prof BR Natarajan addressing the sophomores of Chemical Engineering at Banasthali on 11 July 2019 highlighted the above soft skills after which all the students took a psychometric test with a weightage of 200 on measurement of motivation, aptitude and attitude.

Ms Anjali Yadav with a score of 172 took the first position, Ms Mahima Jha with a score of 171 took the second position and Ms Bhumika with a score of 169 took the third position. The session concluded with tips on improving motivation, aptitude and attitude scores.
