Prof Umesh Kumar Dwivedi Talk on Tribology of Polymer Composites at Banasthali

A polymer composite is a multi-phase material in which reinforcing fillers are integrated with a polymer matrix, resulting in synergistic mechanical properties that cannot be achieved from either component alone. Polymer composites have been found to have excellent friction and wear performance after being modified with functional fillers and reinforcements. This advantage makes them flexible in many industrial applications.

Global advanced polymer composites market to grow at a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 7.81% during the period 2017-2021 owing to rising demand from wind energy and aerospace industries. Advanced polymer composites are increasingly finding application in wind blades manufacturing. Increasing importance for energy generation through renewable sources and growing requirement for high material strength in wind power installations is expected to be a major factor driving advanced polymer composites demand over the forecast period.

Composite materials are rapidly substituting metals such as aluminum, titanium and steel in aeronautical & aircraft components such as turbine blades, heat exchangers and chemical reaction vessels as they provide for lighter weight and better resistance towards chemical corrosion. Other major end-use industries associated with advanced polymer composites include electrical & electronics, automotive, consumer goods and marine.

Dr Umesh Kumar Dwivedi is presently Associate Professor at Amity School of Applied Sciences Jaipur and his area of expertise and current research interest includes Polymer composites. On 08 Sep 2018, he gave a talk on tribology of polymer composites at Banasthali Chemical Engineering department. Prof Satish Shukla welcomed him with a bouquet and Prof BR Natarajan anchored the proceedings and proposed vote of thanks.

Prof Umesh highlighted the eco friendliness, higher specific properties, cost effectiveness and better performance aspects of Polymer Matrix Composites (PMCs) and pointed out that engineering materials may fall under thermoplastic polymers which are commercially the most important or thermosetting polymers and elastomers (both natural and synthetic rubbers). Common thermoplastics include Polyethylene, polyvinylchloride, polypropylene, polystyrene, and nylon while common thermosetting plastics include phenolics, epoxies and certain polyesters.

He also explained the hand lay-up moulding, press moulding, centrifugal moulding etc. The chemical engineering students got excited by the details of tribological characterization of material and determining wear such as adhesive, abrasive, corrosive, fretting etc, the research prospects and interdisciplinary aspects. The talk ended with a lively question and answer session.
