Pinoxaden is a highly selective systemic herbicide used to control monocotyledonous grass weeds in crops such as wild oats, rye-grass and black grass in winter and spring wheat and winter and spring barley. Pinoxaden is a synthetic compound, belonging to the phenylpyrazolin group of chemicals. It is a post-emergance systemic herbicide specifically for grass species. It is applied as a foliar spray and is absorbed and translocated throughout the plant. It acts by inhibiting ACCase action, thereby preventing fattu acid synthesis. Weeds treated with pinoxaden will begin to show leaf chlorosis and yellowing at the nodes within days of treatment beginning, and decay and necrosis follower. Safteners present in the formulation prevent phytotoxic effects in the crops due to accelerated metabolism. Pinoxaden is approved for use on barley, wheat, amenity grassland and managed amenity turf. A broad range of grass species are targeted, including Alopecurus myosuroides, Apera spica-venti, Avena ludoviciana, Avena sterilis, Avena fatua, Lolium multiflorum, Lolium rigidum, Phalaris minor, Phalaris paradoxa and Poa trivialis.
