HDPE Price Forecast 2026: Global Prices Face Diverging Regional Trends
Global HDPE prices are showing divergent regional movements in Mid 2026 as downstream demand, polyethylene inventories, feedstock costs, supply availability and logistics conditions continue to shape procurement decisions. While North American prices have softened, parts of Europe and Asia are showing firmer price signals, creating a more fragmented outlook for buyers of high-density polyethylene (HDPE).The latest regional price indicators point to this divergence. August 2026 HDPE prices were assessed at around USD 1.19/kg in North America, USD 1.66/kg in Europe, USD 1.25/kg in Northeast Asia, USD 1.16/kg in Southeast Asia and USD 1.05/kg in India.
This regional spread highlights why the HDPE price forecast is becoming increasingly important for manufacturers, converters, packaging producers, pipe manufacturers and procurement teams managing resin purchases across multiple sourcing markets.
Regional Price of HDPE Trends Remain Mixed
The HDPE pricing landscape is currently moving in different directions across major regions.
In North America, August pricing indicators show a decline of around 1.7% from the previous period, although suppliers have reportedly proposed a five-cent-per-pound increase amid supply-risk premiums. Europe, by contrast, recorded an increase of around 3.7%, while Northeast Asia and Southeast Asia increased by approximately 3.3% and 3.6%, respectively. India remained broadly unchanged at around USD 1.05/kg.
China is also showing renewed price movement. Polyethylene was trading around CNY 8,048/MT on August 18, 2026, up 1.02% on the day and 2.35% over the previous month.
These developments suggest that the global HDPE price trend is unlikely to follow a single direction during the remainder of Q3 2026.

Why Are HDPE Prices Moving Differently Across Regions?
Several factors are currently influencing HDPE pricing.
1. Downstream Demand
Demand from packaging, construction, pipes, containers and consumer products remains a key pricing variable. HDPE is widely used in rigid packaging, pipes, films, containers and industrial applications, making its pricing highly sensitive to converter operating rates and procurement cycles.
Recent Chinese polyethylene analysis points to weaker downstream purchasing and relatively high inventories at some facilities, limiting price momentum despite manageable supply.
At the same time, infrastructure and pipe applications continue to provide structural support. Global HDPE pipe demand is expected to benefit from infrastructure investment, while Asia Pacific remains the largest regional market for HDPE pipes.
2. Feedstock and Energy Costs
Ethylene economics remain critical to the HDPE price outlook because ethylene is the principal feedstock used in polyethylene production.
Changes in crude oil, natural gas, naphtha and ethylene costs can alter producer cost structures and influence resin offers. The sharp changes in petrochemical trade flows and energy costs seen during 2026 have therefore increased the importance of feedstock monitoring for HDPE buyers.
3. Global Supply and Trade Flows
Supply availability is another major factor behind the current regional divergence.
The Middle East is a critical polyethylene exporting region. Reuters reported that the region represented more than 40% of global polyethylene exports in 2025, meaning disruptions affecting Middle Eastern exports can significantly alter global resin availability and trade flows.
New production capacity is also expected to influence pricing. Argus previously indicated that approximately 2 million tonnes/year of new US polyethylene capacity was expected to start in the second half of 2026, potentially increasing supply and strengthening buyers' negotiating positions in the domestic US market.
Updated HDPE Prices in Major Markets - Q2 2026
IMARC Group's Q2 2026 price-tracking data showed significant regional differences in HDPE prices:
• USA: USD 1,194/MT
• China: USD 1,023/MT
• Germany: USD 991/MT
• United Kingdom: USD 1,327/MT
• Brazil: USD 1,042/MT
The regional variation demonstrates the importance of freight costs, domestic availability, import exposure, feedstock economics and downstream demand when assessing HDPE procurement costs.

HDPE Price Forecast for the Remainder of 2026
The near-term HDPE price forecast points toward regional divergence rather than a uniform global price direction.
In North America, additional polyethylene capacity could increase supply availability and place pressure on domestic prices, although producers may attempt to defend margins through price increases if supply-risk premiums rise. The balance between new capacity, inventory levels and converter demand will therefore be important.
In Asia, pricing could remain sensitive to Chinese domestic demand, inventories, export availability and crude oil-related cost movements. A decline in polyethylene social inventories in China earlier in July provided some price support, with sampled inventories falling 5.43% from the previous period.
Europe faces a different set of variables. Import availability, logistics costs and supply disruptions could provide greater price support than in regions with more abundant domestic supply.
For procurement teams, this means that the HDPE price forecast should be evaluated on a country and grade basis rather than through a single global benchmark.
What Could Push HDPE Prices Higher?
Several factors could create upward pressure on HDPE prices during the coming months:
• Higher crude oil and ethylene costs
• Renewed logistics disruptions
• Reduced Middle Eastern export availability
• Lower regional inventories
• Stronger packaging demand
• Increased infrastructure and pipe-grade demand
• Unplanned production outages
• Higher freight costs
A renewed supply disruption would be particularly important because polyethylene trade flows remain highly dependent on major exporting regions.
What Could Push HDPE Prices Lower?
Conversely, prices could face downward pressure if:
• New polyethylene capacity ramps up as planned
• Downstream converter demand remains weak
• Buyers maintain a hand-to-mouth purchasing strategy
• Regional inventories increase
• Chinese exports remain competitive
• Crude oil and feedstock costs decline
• Freight rates normalize
The combination of additional supply and subdued downstream consumption could therefore create a more buyer-friendly environment in some regions.
HDPE Price Outlook for Buyers
For procurement professionals, the current HDPE environment suggests that timing and regional sourcing will remain important through the remainder of 2026.
Rather than relying solely on a global average, buyers should monitor HDPE price trends by country, grade and application, particularly for injection molding, blow molding, film and pipe-grade material.
This is especially important because current pricing indicators show a meaningful gap between regions. North American prices are softer while Europe and parts of Asia are showing firmer movements.
Longer-term demand fundamentals remain constructive. Mordor Intelligence estimates global HDPE demand at 64.68 million tonnes in 2026, with demand projected to reach 80.79 million tonnes by 2031 at a 4.55% CAGR.

Conclusion:
The HDPE price forecast for the remainder of 2026 remains highly dependent on the balance between new supply, downstream purchasing, feedstock costs and international trade flows. Current indicators point to a mixed regional picture rather than a synchronized global trend.
For manufacturers and procurement teams, tracking HDPE prices, historical price movements, regional price indexes and forward forecasts can help identify cost risks and optimize purchasing decisions.
