Author Q&A

Do you see writing as a career?

Yes! I have worked at it my entire life and finally have the opportunity and confidence to present my work in the best possible way. I have always kept in mind that you are going to be good at something you must practice. I take every opportunity to write whether it is books, academic papers, or course content. I work at writing every day.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?

I have always loved writing. When I was a little girl, (second grade) my father would bring home manilla folders and I would write shot stories, pictures and all- then turn them into the school library where other students could check them out.

Later, in the 5th and 6th grades I wrote plays and used my recesses to practice and perform them with other students. In the 5th grade my play was about the life of Martin Luther King. A friend and I went to each class and used a shadow box to perform/present the play. It was a great confidence builder.

For your own reading, do you prefer ebooks or traditional paperback books?

Paperbacks, I love turning the pages and highlighting useful points. However, I tend to read more e-books right now.

If you had the opportunity to live anywhere in the world for a year while writing a book that took place in that same setting, where would you choose?

Colorado mountains. I went on a trip with my family once for spring break. I find the scenery refreshing. The mountains, streams, trees, snow - I think I could write something really great there.

Do you feel like you'd be a better writer if you wore sparkly socks during your writing sessions?

No, it's a fancy pen for me! Although, I use my computer for writing, I do most of my outlines and edits by hand. Writing with a fancy pen makes me feel connected to my work.

What does being a successful author look like to you?

I am still working through answering this question. Sometimes I think that I would like to write full-time-only write. However, I also enjoy the other aspects of my career as a professor helping individuals achieve their goals to earn a professional doctorate in healthcare. Maybe I am living my dream and just haven't acknowledged it until now.

Do you ever take random writing breaks to dance? If so, when do these breaks generally occur?

Yes! I love music. I listen to classical music. It's my favorite! But sometimes when I am writing I go to my playlist of songs and sing and dance. It is freeing and often gives me a new perspective. I am also reminded not to take myself so seriously.

What is your favorite time to write, and why?

Late at night. While pursuing my PhD I found it was the best time to write. It is quiet and I have time to write without interruption.

How do you think being a writer has helped you as a person?

Being a writer has helped me become more intentional when it comes to what I say. I understand the power of words and so I try to be careful when interacting with others. Sometimes you don't have the proper words to articulate your message. It is okay to walk away- take a break and come back to the conversation or idea later. Spoken and written words have power.
