The Kas-Kalkan Region Boosts its Potential in Underwater Diving Tourism

With its natural beauty and extensive coastline, the Kaş-Kalkan region has become one of Turkey's and Western Antalya's favorite tourist destinations. The Kaş-Kalkan Region, renowned for its underwater diving tourism, will gain more visibility through the diving map and report prepared by the Western Mediterranean Development Agency in various languages.

Kaş District: A Hub for Diving Enthusiasts in Turkey

The Kaş-Kalkan region shines brightly on Turkey's tourism map. This area, distinguished by its natural beauty and expansive coastline, also stands out for its underwater diving tourism. Referred to as the Mediterranean's Red Sea, the Kaş District is the top diving destination in Turkey and the second in the entire Mediterranean.

In the past decade, the Kaş District has become a major center for tourism activities. With its Blue Flag beaches, secluded coves, natural beauty, and historical richness, it not only attracts visitors seeking sun and sand but also positions itself as an ideal destination for underwater diving tourism. With tunnels, caves, artificial reefs, historical remnants, and rich underwater life, Kaş-Kalkan serves as an oasis for underwater diving tourism.

Potential in Diving Tourism is High, but Not Utilized Throughout the Year

To enhance the potential of underwater diving tourism in the Kaş-Kalkan region, various initiatives have been undertaken alongside advancements in diving activities. According to 2023 data, approximately 140,000 people visited the Kaş-Kalkan region with the intention of diving in the months of July, August, and September. However, the concentration of underwater diving tourism primarily during the summer months indicates that the region's full potential is not fully utilized.

Worldwide, underwater diving tourism plays a significant role in the commercial growth of many countries and contributes to the economy. The Western Mediterranean Development Agency's efforts, realized through the Diving Points Map of Western Antalya (Kaş-Kalkan Region) and the Infographic Mapping of Underwater Diving Points in the Western Antalya Region, aim to spread the economic activities of the region's diving tourism throughout the year.

This comprehensive study is considered a crucial step to understand the current state of underwater diving tourism in the Kaş-Kalkan region and guide future strategies. Recommendations derived from discussions and analyses with stakeholders involved in diving tourism aim to transform the region's underwater diving tourism into a sustainable ecotourism activity.

The mapping study features exclusive diving points awaiting discovery in the Kaş-Kalkan region, famous for the beauty of Western Antalya:

Fener Burnu, Plane Wreck, Underwater Statue Museum, Camel Reef, Kovanlı Island, Canyon Dimitri Wreck, Oasis Bank, Flying Fish, Besmi Island, Pina Bank, Heybeli Island, Big Cave, Tunnel, 13 Bank, Sarıot Island, Hidayet Bay - Underwater Archaeo Park, Güvercin Island - Tank Wreck, Neptune Reef, Coast Guard Wreck, Anchor Bank, Gürmenli Island Wall, Gürmenli Rocks, and Gürmenli Island Kapadokya are among the diving points waiting to be explored in the Kaş region.

In the Kalkan region, certified points that await diving enthusiasts include Fırnaz Cove, Dolphine Reef, Frank Wall, York Duchess - Sakarya Wreck, Heybeli Island, Kaptanoğlu, and Öksüz Island.
