Irving, TX - https://covidinstitute.org/ - Dr. Robert Groysman, a renowned double board-certified physician and owner of SW Pain Management, is proud to announce the founding of the Covid Institute - a first-of-its-kind private, medical practice in Texas. The institute focuses exclusively on the comprehensive treatment, care and support of Long Covid patients, a cohort also referred to as having Long Haul Covid, Post-Covid Persistence, or Post-Acute Sequelae of Long Covid. As its founder, Dr. Groysman, who has been treating Long Covid patients since 2020, has recognized the desperate need for a practice dedicated to the treatment of this growing patient population. The Covid Institute's aim is to meet the increasing demand for specialized Long Covid care by consolidating resources, expertise, and treatment options under one clinic.

Dr Groysman, the founder and medical director of the Covid Institute, has been treating Long Covid patients for over 2.5 years and who many considered a relative expert. He is followed by thousands on social media support groups, has been featured in dozens of articles, podcasts and YouTube videos (viewed around the world) and considered a clinical resource both patients and other healthcare professional seeking his advice.

In a statement from Dr Groysman, "With the complexity of care needed to treat Long Covid it could almost be considered a specialty in and of itself. Currently patients desperate for answers, cures and treatment options are bounced around from specialist to specialist who tend to focus solely on masking/treating symptoms vs. addressing the possible underlying cause(s.) Most physicians today are under-equipped or lack the knowledge to make informed decisions and thus refer the patient to a specialist with no known/recognized diagnosis. This leaves the patient frustrated, often times desperate for care, and not knowing where to turn. Unfortunately, except for a select few academic institutions, who are backlogged months or have closed enrolments, there are very few obvious choices for patients to seek care and the very reason I established the institute."

Starting in late 2019, Dr. Groysman' s clinic began seeing an unprecedented influx of relatively healthy patients who were reporting previously un-diagnosed, non-surgical or trauma-related symptoms. The symptoms ranged from smell and taste loss/distortion to shortness of breath to debilitating neuro/cognitive issues: Many of which became associated with Long Haul Covid. The one thing they all shared in common was that the onset of symptoms followed a positive Covid-19 diagnosis or vaccination, which persisted and cascaded over several months. Although some of these symptoms were outside the normal scope of his practice, as a physician, he couldn't simply ignore them and utilized his medial experience and extensive research to offer treatments or advice he believed could help.

Dr. Groysman' s first big breakthrough happened while treating a "long-haul patient" for a non-covid related condition with a stellate ganglion block (SGB.) To everyone's surprise, the patient reported that his smell and taste had returned while in recovery! Typically, SGB's are used to treat neurological conditions like PTSD and pain syndromes which raised the question, could these symptoms, including smell and taste loss be neurologically related?

Intrigued and encouraged at the same time, Dr Groysman began researching and found some studies that supported the SGB had shown to present improvements to smell and taste dysfunction. With the patient's consent, this lead to a second and third patient who all experienced the same results. As word quickly spread on social media support groups, his clinic began seeing 8-10 new patients per week. Promisingly it was also showing signs of improvement in other symptoms including brain fog and fatigue.

Although not universally accepted or recognized by insurance carriers, the federal working definition of Long Covid encompasses a range of signs, symptoms, and conditions that persist or emerge after an initial Covid-19 or SARS-CoV-2 infection. These manifestations occur four weeks or more after the initial infection and may involve multiple bodily systems. With a relapsing-remitting pattern, these symptoms can progress or worsen over time, potentially leading to severe and life-threatening events months or even years after the initial infection. Long Covid represents a complex set of overlapping conditions, each potentially driven by distinct biological causes, risk factors, and outcomes.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and supported by The National Institutes of Health (NIH), an estimated 10% of those infected or 10-15 million individuals in the United States (65 million worldwide) are currently experiencing Long Covid symptoms. The true impact on society, quality of life, and healthcare costs remains not completely understood, but government agencies and watch groups estimate the related expenditures are projected to exceed billions of dollars in both short-term and long-term care. Moreover, the condition's long-term effects impact patients' social functionality, force them to leave their jobs, and hinder their ability to care for their families.

What has been complicating care pathways and treatments for many Long Covid patients is the fact that there are over 200 related symptoms of Long Covid and yet not every patient expresses the same symptoms or in the same severity. The most frequently reported conditions include dysautonomia, chronic fatigue (ME/CFS), cognitive impairment ("Brain Fog"), smell and taste dysfunction (parosmia/anosmia), sudden loss of blood pressure (POTS), shortness of breath (SOB), previously undiagnosed depression/anxiety, chest pains, mast cell activation (MCAS), insomnia, and a variety of gut and gastrointestinal issues. This broad spectrum of symptoms leaves the patient in a never-ending journey, being passed from one specialist to the next.

The one thing that is clear is that there is more research, recognition and financial support needed to help address this expanding population that is experiencing a unique set of conditions unseen before. More dedicated clinics/programs are needed to provide the patient with obvious resources to receive care. Dr Groysman hopes this will be another positive step forward.
