Satellite Analytics helps in the fight against deforestation

Satellite Analytics helps in the fight against deforestation

Deforestation on our planet is advancing rapidly. Since 1990, the Earth has lost over 170 million hectares of forest area - equivalent to the size of Libya. The EU has committed itself to combating deforestation and has introduced a law requiring companies to exercise due diligence in the production of products such as palm oil, soy, coffee, and cocoa. Among other things, they must prove that their products are deforestation-free (i.e., produced on areas that were not deforested after December 31, 2020).

In doing so, the EU is not only supporting forest conservation but also boosting the Earth Observation industry. This directive affects all companies that want to trade in the European market. To fulfill their due diligence obligations, companies must collect geographic information about their agricultural land. The easiest way to obtain this data is from space. The Berlin-based start-up LiveEO is now launching the first commercial solution to capture the deforestation status of areas remotely through automated satellite data analysis.

LiveEO already uses satellite data from various sources to monitor power grids and railways and keep them free of vegetation risks. However, they are now expanding their solution to protect forests, as they can provide not only current but also historical images, thus proving whether areas are truly "deforestation-free."

With user-friendly design, the solution ensures ease of use for both supply chain managers and suppliers while guaranteeing absolute confidentiality and data security. Compatible with all affected commodities, LiveEO's solution benefits from sophisticated vegetation species recognition algorithms and ensures full traceability along the entire supply chain, promoting transparency and accountability. Moreover, the solution can be easily integrated with popular supply chain management systems, such as SAP, through the LiveEO API, enabling a holistic approach to compliance without added complexity.

"We're thrilled to launch another product that has the potential to make a tremendous positive impact on our ecosystems. This is a prime example of how LiveEO's advanced technology can unlock the full potential of Earth Observation data, ultimately bettering the lives of humankind and preserving our planet for generations to come." - Sven Przywarra, Co-Founder of LiveEO.

As LiveEO launches its innovative EUDR compliance solution, the company takes a significant step towards addressing deforestation and promoting responsible supply chain management, contributing to a more sustainable future for our planet.
