The PPS team collect litter during their first Green Week event

PPS Midlands Ltd, a leading UK provider of Returnable Equipment Solutions, launched its first annual 'Green Week' which saw the company undertake a number of environmentally positive initiatives within the local communities surrounding their sites.

From visiting a zero-waste shop, embarking on an educational environmental tour and completing litter-picks, employees dedicated their time to the 'Green Week' event that was born out of the creation of an in-house social & environmental team in 2021.

PPS Group Managing Director Joanne Lee, who formed the company's in-house social & environmental team, said; "As a business sustainability has always been central to our services, it's why we work with reusable packaging and its why we developed our packaging repairs service. But we were keen to take that beyond our services and have a positive impact on our environment and communities. That's why creating the social & environmental group was so important to us".

Keen to help address the issue of increased incidences of litter that had been bought to their attention via a local environmental charity, PPS employees kicked the week off with litter-picking in Uttoxeter Town Centre and Cleethorpes beach front, near to their sites in Marchington and Grimsby respectively. Over 25kg of waste was collected across the locations, with much of it able to be recycled.

Following their litter-picking exploits, PPS continued the week with a visit to The Globe Foundation, an environmental charity based in Uttoxeter that offer educational tours illustrating how companies and individuals can reduce their carbon footprint. The Globe Foundation also highlighted their 'Plastic Free East Staffordshire' and 'Sustainable Uttoxeter' initiatives.

With PPS Green Week continuing, the focus shifted to the issue of food waste and single-use packaging with a visit to a Zero-Waste Shop. Zero Waste shops offer a 'refill your container' concept, which allows shoppers to flex their green muscles and buy locally without the wasteful packaging. PPS Marketing Manager, James Kent, was part of the visit; "Food waste and single-use packaging are two of the biggest environmental issues this country currently faces and our services help address both of these issues within the supply chain. However, visiting the shop run by The Globe Foundation was a real eye-opener and illustrates how we can also address this issue on a personal level by changing our day-to-day shopping habits. I'd urge anyone to visit their local Zero-Waste shop".

Despite the first annual PPS Green Week drawing to a close, there was still time for PPS to announce their new mission statement: 'To reduce the level of single-use packaging in the supply chain, creating a more sustainable future'. A positive message from a business that is looking to lead the way in terms of sustainability.
