Digital Grids And Smart Cities: The Future

02-05-2013 03:05 PM CET | Energy & Environment

Press release from: Fleming Gulf

Fleming Gulf's Digital Grids And Smart Cities Summit, scheduled to take place between 10th & 12th March 2013 at Radisson Blu Hotel in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has garnered immense response from the market. Industry giants: Schneider Electric and Legrand have confirmed their participation as Headline and Diamond Sponsor respectively, and will be showcasing innovations that have revolutionized the smart technology market. Advances in the field of digital grids, smart web, smart communication and smart mobility that contribute to the development of interconnected and intelligent networks will also be showcased at the summit.

Speaking on the role played by governments in implementing smart city initiatives, Sekhar Kondepudi, Associate Professor - Smart Buildings & Smart Cities, NUS, Singapore said “ The government can play a role at multiple levels, ranging from Federal (Country), State / Regional, Local / City, by setting self-contained policies which cascade into one overall policy framework. These policies then can be developed into frameworks and standards which can appropriately be regulated to influence, create policy and also ensure adherence. Appropriate financial incentives can be provided to the remaining stakeholders to spur adoption.”

Sharing his opinion on the technological developments and breakthrough ideas that will shape and empower the smart cities in the near future, he said “ The 'Internet of Things' will drive the Smart City. ICT technologies will play a major role – especially wireless and mobile devices. The ubiquity of both of these technologies will contribute to the “Smart City” paradigm. The City will 'interact' with its populace and all the entities in a seamless manner extending the concept of 'apps' such as those on the Android or iPhone platforms. Such apps will become more pervasive.”

A more regional perspective on developmental ideas came from Dr. Nazar Hussain Malik, Professor at King Saud University and 'Saudi Aramco Chair in Electrical Power stated ' Several ideas have caught my attention that could themselves or with the help of their derivatives be able to empower the Smart technologies. Solar Thermal power plants look very promising with their dispatchable power that reduces the variable nature of the existing solar PV technologies. Emerging communication technologies and the research to deployment time of such technologies (e.g. LTE and UMTS) shows that the communications layer of the smart city can be very effectively handled'. Responding to other breakthrough ideas empowering a Smart city, he said 'Transport technology has also shown rapid improvement in the efficiency with hybrid and all electric variants of vehicles. The only impeding factor is the energy storage for such vehicles. The existing options do not serve the purpose, but looking at the development and research going on in the area, one cannot rule out the possible role these transport vehicles can play in the future'.

Dr. Malik will be sharing his presentation on the scope of aggregators in smart cities alongside opening keynotes from Eng. Nasser Al-Qahtani , Vice Governor – Regulatory Affairs, ECRA (Electricity & Co-generation Regulatory Authority), KSA and Dr. Abdulgader Othman Amir, Vice Mayor - Strategic Planning and Chief Planner, Jeddah Municipality, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
