According to a survey on priorities and challenges facing the global asset management community, recently published by French company Linedata, asset managers and hedge funds are currently being driven into the same space. And the responsible party is regulation.

According to the company's product manager for Northern Europe, Matt Gibbs, much of the new regulation relates to multiple asset classes. On one hand, this has led asset managers to diversify and, on the other, hedge funds, to revert to their more traditionalist roots.

Gibbs explained that as both sides consider how to cope with regulations such as UCITS (Undertakings for Collective Investment in Transferable Securities) or AIFMD (Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive), they are finding themselves in the same business space. Whilst hedge funds are becoming more traditional in their concerns, asset managers are moving towards a larger diversity in assets covered, and managing them in a hedge-like way.

Another outcome of the survey is that regulation can still be found among the top concerns for the buy side. Yet according to Gibbs, it's not the regulation as such that causes concern, but unannounced regulations coming out of the blue, and thus not leaving enough time to cope with them.
