Journeys From There to Here: Stories of Immigrant Trials, Triumphs and Contributions
By Susan J. Cohen with Steven T. Taylor

Proceeds to benefit PAIR, Political Asylum/Immigration Representation Project www.pairproject.org

“From the front lines of the fight for immigrant justice, one of the nation’s leading immigration attorneys shares the stories of courageous immigrants she helps every day. Chapter by chapter, story by story, Susan Cohen sines light on the way our antiquated, and at times cruel, immigration system treats the stranger among us.”
— Ali Noorani, executive director, National Immigration Forum

In her new book, Journeys From There to Here: Stories of Immigrant Trials, Triumphs and Contributions (Greenleaf Publishing/River Grove Press, Nov. 2, 2021), immigration attorney Susan Cohen takes readers from the conference room to the courtroom as we walk with 11 immigrants, all of whom faced heart-wrenching trials and tribulations throughout their efforts to forge a new life in the United States. Cohen shines the spotlight on her clients’ bureaucratic nightmares, the effects of xenophobia, discrimination and racial profiling, and a severely flawed system. But at the end of the day the stories end joyously, are uplifting, and leave the reader with a renewed understanding of the value and contributions immigrants bring to the United States and the vital importance of being a welcoming America.

“It is an incredible privilege for me”, Cohen explains, “to witness firsthand the strength, resilience and tremendous dignity of my immigration clients, who have overcome unimaginable hardships and persecution to make it to our shores, and with their passion, love for democracy and love of learning, have taught me what it means to never give up and to truly become American. I wrote this book to share my clients’ stories with the world, so others can see firsthand how lucky we are to have these brave and dignified souls as our neighbors, co-workers and friends.”

Cohen will donate all of her proceeds from Journeys From There to Here to the Political Asylum/Immigration Representation (PAIR) Project, which provides free legal services to asylum seekers and promotes detained immigrants’ rights.

Cohen, a thought leader on cutting edge, unfolding real-time immigration news stories, is available for interviews about Journeys From There to Here and is happy to speak on:
● Constitutional and other legal challenges to U.S. immigration laws, policies and regulations
● Nuances of employment-based immigration laws and regulations and the impact of our immigration law on US employers of every type
● The impact of our laws on the lives of skilled and unskilled foreign national employees and their families
● Our student visa laws and policies and how they impact U.S. colleges and universities and their communities
● The intersection of entrepreneurship, job creation and immigration law

As founding Chair of the Mintz Immigration Practice, Susan Cohen, brings over 35 years of experience to her cutting-edge immigration practice. Susan is the recipient of dozens of awards for her immigration work and contributions to our nation’s immigration law, policy and regulations. Cohen led a team working with the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts to obtain a temporary restraining order on the 2017 Travel Ban. In 2020, she led a Mintz team supporting efforts by many U.S. universities and hundreds of thousands of foreign students in litigation which overturned the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s controversial and dangerous COVID-related student visa policy. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts hired Cohen to help the state write the first-ever statute to help talented foreign entrepreneurs remain in the country on a special type of immigration visa to buy them time to get more permanent status. She is president of the board of the Political Asylum/Immigration Representation (PAIR) Project. When Cohen isn’t tirelessly working and advocating for immigrants and asylum seekers, she enjoys singing, songwriting, producing immigration-themed music videos, horse-back riding and traveling. She lives in Massachusetts.
