New this year: Design competition Ingenious Creation

Useful, artistic and desirable – these are the criteria for the creation of an object of daily use that will enrich our lives. Eight of the most convincing entries will be on show in a special exhibition at the Zeughausmesse, Decorative Arts Fair. These include the lovable figures by Susanne Wetzel, as well as Sabine Martin’s appealing Berlin cobble stone salt and pepper sellers. By simply sliding four of its elements into different positions the ingenious shelf by Johannes Wittich can be creatively reshaped without tools. In brief: All the objects on show have the potential to inspire and to delight.

Decorative Art award sponsored by Berliner Volksbank

For the ninth time the Zeughausmesse, Decorative Arts Fair, is awarding the Decorative Art Prize sponsored by Berliner Volksbank. A jury of Decorative Arts professionals will choose the most outstanding works. The first and second prizes are endowed with the sum of 1,500 Euros and 1,000 Euros respectively. The third prize is an acquisition for the collection of the ’Deutsches Historisches Museum' valued at 600 Euros.

Editorial note:
Berlin's Zeughausmesse, Decorative Arts Fair has been taking place in the Schlüterhof of the Deutsche Historische Museum since December 2004. Within a very short time thanks to the high standard of quality the Zeughausmesse; Decorative Arts Fair has established itself as one of the leading fairs for contemporary art for everyday use. The participating artists are chosen by a panel of judges. Once a year in winter three female and male artists respectively are honoured with the 'Prize for Applied Art of the Berlin Volksbank’ for their exceptional achievements. In December 2012 for the first time selected objects from the competition’ Ingenious Creation’ can be viewed at the Zeughausmesse, Decorative Arts Fair. The competition's most useful and artistic objects of everyday use will be on show.
The Berlin Zeughausmesse, Decorative Arts Fair is organised by the Berufsverband Angewandte Kunst (Professional Association for Applied Art) Berlin-Brandenburg e.V. From 2012 onwards the fair will be held once a year in December instead of previously twice a year. The Schlüterhof of the Deutsche Historische Museum provides the perfect ambience for this fair. As early as 1844 a broad spectrum of Berlin arts and crafts were represented iat this location in the framework of the ‘Allgemeine Deutsche Gewerbeausstellung’ (general German trade exhibition) to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the German Customs Union. Today, in this era of soulless industrial product uniformity, the Zeughausmesse, Decorative Arts Fair has made it its mission to sharpen people's senses with respect to the beauty and special quality of fine objects of daily use, as well as jewellery which are manufactured on the basis of traditional craftsmanship with distinctive artistic characteristics.
