A solar protection fabric offering new high-tech protection
markilux solar protection fabric "sunvas perla FR" is now available with a new FR certified and waterproof polyurethane coating.
"sunvas perla FR" is a solar protection fabric produced by the awning manufacturer markilux, which has recently been made not only waterproof (for purpose) but also highly flame retardant in compliance with the B1 fire prevention class. This results from the special FR polyurethane coating it has been given, which is both environmentally friendly and virtually transparent.
The waterproof (for purpose) high-tech polyester material "sunvas perla" by markilux has been on the market for a number of years already. But, so that it, too, can fulfil the fire safety standard EN 13501-1 for public buildings, it has also been equipped with a special polyurethane coating. From now on, the fabric will bear the additional abbreviation FR, which stands for highly flame retardant and complies with the B1 fire prevention class.
The new FR coating is now transparent
"The new coating applied to 'sunvas perla FR' combines all the positive characteristics of the two coatings used on 'sunsilk perla FR' and 'sunvas perla'. As a result the solar protection fabric is waterproof, highly flame retardant and its coating transparent", says Michael Gerling, Director of R&D and Production. "Consequently the colour intensity is almost as striking as that of fabrics that haven't been given this new coating. The slightly milky appearance of the underside of the material, that we know from the coated 'sunsilk material' is no longer in evidence in 'sunvas perla FR'. Technically, this was quite a challenge, as the chemical finishes 'flame retardant' and 'waterproof' showed diametrically opposite physicochemical reactions. "According to Mr. Gerling, this was the case, because additives used in the FR finish are hygroscopic, whereas in contrast, the adhesive for the fluorocarbon, which makes the fabric waterproof, is flammable. "We really had to be pretty resourceful to give the material the properties we had envisioned", Mr. Gerling explains. And that too included, giving the fabric a halogen-free and therefore more environmentally friendly, flame-retardant finish. But the fabric has yet one more advantage to it. It is now permanently pliable - even at low temperatures. And, in addition to the FR coating, the material has also been impregnated with our tried and tested SFC dirt-inhibiting and weatherproof finish, just as its predecessor was.
