Unlimited Disk Space, Unlimited Bandwidth – The Hosting Trap

02-05-2012 02:34 PM CET | IT, New Media & Software

Press release from: JSI Hosting

FEBRUARY 03, 2012 - There are many web hosting plans available in the market to choose from. Some of those are advertised as having unlimited web space, bandwidth, databases and so forth while other plans are limited. Whichever case, most of companies conceal an important detail that might create problems later for the webmaster: inode counting.

Inode is a term used in computing to describe a data structure that stores information about a file or directory. Whenever a new file is created into the server, a new inode is also created referring to it. It turns out that the number of inodes represents the number of files in the server. On many systems, there is a limit on the quantity of those inodes, then hosting providers use this number to control server usage. Here comes the trap: although a hosting plan is advertised as “unlimited”, when the number of inodes reach its limit, the customer account is suspended and in most cases the host provider do not increase the limit. Moreover, chances are that files, and even databases, become corrupted.

Having said that, webmasters must be aware of this sneaky limitation in order to avoid problems later on and look for hosting providers, such as JSI Hosting, that do not use inode counting. Therefore, the hosting package's limits are those actual numbers advertised, so webmasters are sure that they get what they paid for.
