Press release from: SensoMotoric Instruments GmbH

SMI Surgery Guidance™ Solution is Mature and Complete From Pre-Op Diagnostics to Post-Op Assessment

SensoMotoric Instruments GmbH (SMI), the established leader in eye tracking solutions for refractive laser surgery, exhibits the latest version of its Surgery Guidance Solution at the annual congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons – ESCRS in Vienna, September 17th – 20th. The SMI Surgery Guidance™ solution allows surgeons to position perfectly cataract surgery steps as well as implants based on objective data of the eye without any use of manual marker. With over 2000 premium surgeries performed and full process coverage from pre-operative diagnostics to post-operative control, the SMI Surgery Guidance™ Solution has proven clinical value and maturity.

In more than 2000 cases, SMI Surgery Guidance™ Solutions have supported surgeons in the optimal orientation of toric IOLs, the centration of multifocal IOLs, the positioning of incisions and LRIs, the centration and size of the capsulorhexis in cataract surgery and refractive lens exchange. Three key elements provide the surgeon with unique support and information throughout the surgery from preparation to post-operative control.

1. The automated registration of eye position and eye rotation from diagnostic to surgery to post-surgery provide the basis for an optimal procedure.
2. The SMI Microscope Integrated Display™ (MID) - compatible with almost all microscopes - provides information during surgery when and where it is needed to efficiently perform a high quality surgery.
3. With the dedicated SMI Reference Unit™, the smart connectivity to the HaagStreit LenStar and the direct link to online IOL calculation platforms, the SMI Surgery Guidance™ Solutions can seamlessly link all critical steps of the cataract surgery process. The new post-operative registration functionality allows the unique assessment of post-op lens position (changes).

“With the clinical experience under the belt and the extension of the registration functionality along the process, the SMI Surgery Guidance Solution has proven to be a uniquely effective, reliable and efficient tool.” says the medical innovator Dr. Rudy Nuijts, Director of Cornea Clinic University of Maastricht. “The extended functionality of our Surgery Guidance Solution for the first time offers the control and differentiation of eye movements from IOL position. This unique capability is provided in an efficient format that allows the surgeon to consistantly achieve her or his goals and assess results.” Adds Dr. Oliver Kersting, Head of SMI’s Ophthalmic Systems business division.
