Successful pregnancy after tubal reversal surgery in mother with history of endometrial ablation

Successful pregnancy after tubal reversal surgery in mother with history of endometrial ablation

Women who have had a tubal ligation and endometrial ablation are told they can never become pregnant again. Endometrial ablation is a common surgical procedure used to treat women who are severely anemic because of heavy mensural periods. During an endometrial ablation procedure, the endometrial lining is removed. Removal of the uterine lining increases the risk of future pregnancy for both the baby and mother. In some cases, pregnancy after endometrial ablation is impossible and most health care professionals strongly advise against becoming pregnant after an endometrial ablation. Dr. Charles Monteith is a fertility surgeon who has shown pregnancy after endometrial ablation is safe and possible in specially selected candidates. In a recent publication, Can you get pregnant after endometrial ablation and tubal ligation?, Dr. Monteith describes his experience in helping women become naturally pregnant after an endometrial ablation procedure.
Pregnancy after endometrial ablation is believed to at such high risk women are required to have a tubal ligation to guarantee pregnancy does not occur. Unfortunately, many women will regret their decision and want to become pregnant again; however, their options for having more children after endometrial ablation are limited. Most infertility specialist recommend endometrial ablation patients have in-vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment and use a gestational surrogate to carry the IVF conceived pregnancy. Unfortunately, the cost of a gestational surrogate is exorbitant and will prevent many couples from having another child.
Dr. Monteith specializes in helping couples become pregnant naturally after tubal ligation and vasectomy. He is the Medical Director of A Personal Choice, which is a specialty surgical center located in Raleigh, NC and exclusively devoted to providing affordable, outpatient sterilization reversal surgery. Dr. Monteith helps women become pregnant after endometrial ablation and tubal ligation. Many women reach out to Dr. Monteith in desperation wanting to become pregnant after endometrial ablation because other doctors have advised pregnancy is not possible. Dr. Monteith is supportive of these women because he understands they have had to make a very difficult choice. Women who suffer from severe anemia have to choose either the more conservative treatment of endometrial ablation or the more radical treatment of hysterectomy. Endometrial ablation is easier and safer to perform than a hysterectomy and can be performed in a doctor’s office. Many of these women choose the safer, easier treatment of endometrial ablation but will regret this decision in the future if they wish to have more children.
Dr. Monteith is one of few fertility surgeons who are willing to help women become pregnant after endometrial ablation. He advises the best candidates are those who are having regular monthly periods of at least three days duration. Women who have regular menstrual periods after endometrial ablation have evidence of functional uterine lining and can become pregnant naturally. He advises against the unnecessary test commonly ordered by many other health care professionals. In his opinion, pelvic ultrasounds and expensive blood tests are poor predictors of fertility after endometrial ablation. The age of the female patient and regular monthly periods are better predictors of pregnancy after endometrial ablation than any lab or imaging test.
If women are considering tubal ligation reversal surgery after ablation, Dr. Monteith requires these women be premenopausal and have regular, monthly menstrual cycles of at least three days duration. He then requires women considering treatment to send copies of their surgical reports to his office for review. After reviewing these records, Dr. Monteith can determine which of these women will be the safest surgical candidates with the best chance of pregnancy. He then requires a consultation to discuss the risks of pregnancy after endometrial ablation. During the consultation, Dr. Monteith discusses all aspects of surgery with a special emphasis on the risks of pregnancy after endometrial ablation.
Once approved for surgery, many of these women will travel to Raleigh, North Carolina for treatment. They will spend two nights and three days in Raleigh. Their consultation appointment will be the first day, surgery the second day, and their postoperative appointment on the third day. Many patients will return home after their postoperative visit and are encouraged to follow up with their local physicians as soon as they return home. Patients are advised they can start trying to become pregnant as soon as they feel comfortable. Most patients will become pregnant within the first 12 months of reversal surgery.
A recent patient of Dr. Monteith’s submitted a testimonial about her experience with tubal ligation reversal surgery after endometrial ablation. In her testimony she says, “I had my tubes tied in 2012 after the birth of my youngest daughter, then an endometrial ablation in 2014.My fiancé and me have no children together… After three years of saving, research planning, and preparing we had our tubal reversal 8 months ago… I am currently 30 weeks pregnant (we successfully got pregnant in March). Our son is due December 12th, and this is my healthiest pregnancy yet. We are so thankful to Dr. Monteith. There were so many risk factors because of my medical history, and so many negative conversations, but Dr. Monteith gave us the opportunity to make our own educated decision about getting the reversal and we could not be happier. He and his staff truly are the best.”
Dr. Monteith named his center A Personal Choice because he believes in allowing patients the autonomy to make very personal choices about how to best control their fertility. As a surgeon, he takes great pride in using his special skills to help couples restore their natural fertility. When other doctors say it is not possible, Dr. Monteith says it can be done. With Dr. Monteith second chances are possible and permanent is not forever.
