Dr. Leigh-Davis, Radio Host & Law Professor, Stands Up for Mark Twain’s Words

On a recent episode of the radio show “The Real Deal,” host Dr. Leigh-Davis digressed in to a diatribe on the changing of Mark Twain’s words, in the literary classic “Huckleberry Finn,” which she referred to as “tragic.”

Now available on iTunes, the episode of “The Real Deal” entitled “Books>N.Y. Times Best Sellers list–Is there a lower standard for books today?,” recently aired live. The discussion on books, led to a discussion on the recent publishings of “Huckleberry Finn,” which included changes of several of Mark Twain’s words, including the N-word and the word “Indian.” Although Dr. Leigh-Davis said she feels the use of the N-word is “awful,” she stood up for Mark Twain’s right to have his works preserved in their original form. Dr. Leigh-Davis opined, “The remedy is to not read it; if you don’t like it. Or have someone cross out all the parts that disturb you, before you read it.”

Dr. Leigh-Davis did not plan to even discuss the issue of changing the words of Mark Twain and other authors. However, due to the large response on this issue, a future episode of “The Real Deal” will be focused entirely on the topic. “One wouldn’t go paint eyebrows on the Mona Lisa because they thought it would look better that way. This would be seen as defaming DiVinci’s work of art. Well, ‘Huckleberry Finn’ is Mark Twain’s work of art, and changing the words is defaming it,” Dr. Leigh-Davis concluded.

A future “Real Deal” episode in the series “Books>N.Y. Times Best Sellers list–Is there a lower standard for books today?,” is currently being scheduled, and as always, archived episodes will be available on iTunes.
