Powering ASEAN’s Bright Future through the 5th ASEAN Youth Video contest on Renewable Energy

Jakarta, 25 January 2019 – This week, the ASEAN Foundation launched the 5th ASEAN Youth Video Contest (AYVC) with the theme “Renewable Energy: Powering ASEAN’s Bright Future”. The deadline for application is due by 19 February 2019.

Similar to the previous years, the 5th ASEAN Youth Video Contest is endorsed by the ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Youth and designed to generate a better understanding of the ASEAN Community and its dynamic, particularly among the region’s younger demographic. This year’s video contest is also supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), through the ASEAN-USAID PROSPECT project, and the ASEAN-German Energy Programme (AGEP), a cooperation jointly implemented by ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

This video contest is giving a platform for youth to raise their voice creatively using the power of digital tools such as video and social media coupled with people-to-people interaction. This powerful combination, especially in this digital era, will effectively increase awareness about renewable energy in ASEAN, including the region’s potential (i.e. solar, wind, hydro, biomass, ocean wave and geothermal), and accelerate development in the sector. As emphasised as well by Elaine Tan, the Executive Director of ASEAN Foundation, of the importance of the programme, “Through collaboration and innovation; the 5th ASEAN Youth Video Contest will be the seamless avenue for creative youth across ASEAN to gather ideas to innovate together. With ASEAN youth's insightful ideas, we will go hand in hand creating a more cohesive ASEAN community and put forward #RenewableEnergy awareness.”

The Contest will bring together one (1) selected finalist from each Member State to Hanoi, Viet Nam, to learn professional video making skills and techniques to amplify their voices on this topic to wider audiences. The training will be hosted by Viet Nam Journalists Association (VJTC) in Hanoi. The 10 finalists are also eligible to winning attractive prizes, supported by the ASEAN Foundation.

Information to participate in the 5th ASEAN Youth Video Contest could be found on https://www.facebook.com/AYVC2019

About ASEAN Foundation
Three decades after ASEAN was established, ASEAN leaders recognised that: there remained inadequate shared prosperity, ASEAN awareness and contact among the people of ASEAN. It was of this concern that ASEAN leaders established ASEAN Foundation in Jakarta, Indonesia, at ASEAN’s 30th Anniversary Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 15 December 1997. The ASEAN Foundation is an organisation from and for the people of ASEAN. The Foundation exists because of one vision: to build a cohesive and prosperous ASEAN Community. As an ASEAN body, the Foundation is tasked to support ASEAN mainly in promoting awareness, identity, interaction and development of the people of ASEAN.
