Solar Carport Installation Activates at San Diego State University on November 4

Sullivan Solar Power energized San Diego State University’s most recent solar installation for the Associated Students of SDSU’s Children’s Center last Thursday. The 28,000 Watt solar electric system is a dual-purpose structure, also serving as a shaded carport for the parking lot just outside the child care and preschool facility.

“It's an amazing educational opportunity for our future generations to see the solar photovoltaic system producing energy each day, knowing the project will provide approximately 35 percent of the annual electricity for the Children's Center,” said Tara Kelly, Associated Students Sustainability Commissioner.

Funding for the installation came from an empowered student body self-imposed fee to create sustainable upgrades to the student government's seven campus facilities. Through this referendum initiative, San Diego State University has been home to one of the most environmentally progressive collegiate campuses in the nation.

“The Children's Center system is unique in that it clearly showcases how the students are leading by example. With this addition, the students have provided University facilities with over 200,000 watts of clean green renewable energy. These systems combined will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 424,000 pounds per year," said Daniel Sullivan, founder and president of Sullivan Solar Power.

The solar array installed by Sullivan’s local company consists of 144 American-made SHARP solar panels, and four SMA Sunny Boy inverters. The structure was built by M Bar C Carports. The complexity of the carport added time to the project. "It was a pleasure to work with SDSU Faculty and the construction crew, we worked together as a team." said Quinn Laudenslager, Commercial Project Manager of Sullivan Solar Power.

“Associated Students is very excited for its newly completed solar PV structure at the SDSU Children’s Center. This is but one project amongst a long list of renewable energy projects we plan to implement in the near future," said student body president Grant Mack.

Mack continued, “By 2020 the Associated Students has committed to making the SDSU Children’s Center be 100 percent solar powered to meet our long term sustainability goal of having the facility be net-energy zero."

The company has installed over 5,000,000 watts of solar power ranging from small-scale residential to large-scale commercial and municipal systems.
