Lohmar, 22.02.24. Emelie, 17 years old, has fulfilled her dream: To spend a year at a boarding school abroad. When she heard about the opportunity to attend a boarding school in Hawaii with the student exchange organization international EXPERIENCE e.V., she didn't hesitate for long. She applied for the program and was accepted. Thus began the adventure that would change her life.

A boarding school is something very special: the students live together on a campus surrounded by nature. They have access to modern facilities such as sports fields, swimming pools, laboratories and libraries. They learn in small classes with dedicated teachers who offer them individual support. They can choose from a wide range of subjects, from art and music to mathematics and science - an excellent academic education is offered. Sports, hiking, dancing, theater and much more are available as leisure activities.

Instant friends on student exchange

The warm and friendly community of all the students there plays a central role in boarding school life. She quickly felt at home in her dormitory, where the teenager from Germany lived with other students from different countries. The dormitory parents and fellow residents form a family atmosphere and offer a sense of security. Emelie made new friends with whom she spent her free time, cooked, laughed and chatted.



Close integration of the exchange students

Emelie had many unforgettable experiences during her exchange year. She has particularly fond memories of a surfing trip with the boarding school students, where she learned this sport with her friends and enjoyed the waves of the Pacific. She also raves about the graduation ceremony at her high school, which has a special tradition in Hawaii: Students are adorned with wreaths of flowers, the "leis", and celebrated with music and dancing. Emelie felt honored and proud to be part of this ceremony.



Learning new habits easily during the year abroad

Emelie says that her student exchange at boarding school has changed her life. She got to know a new culture that is characterized by respect, hospitality and - typical of Hawaii - the aloha spirit. Of course, she was also able to improve her English skills. During her year abroad at boarding school, the exchange student learned to be open and curious, to adapt and to overcome challenges. She has developed personally and strengthened her self-confidence. And she has formed close friendships with people who were previously strangers, across borders and time zones.
