Press release from: iE VWO

Exchange students can experience a double placement in their host family (© international EXPERIENCE e. V./Queechy High School)

Lohmar, December 23, 23 - Host siblings often desire for adolescents attending school abroad to reside with them in host families to ease these exchange students' transitions into their new environments. Host families, as the experts at international EXPERIENCE e. V. know, can come in many different forms:

One variation might include having not only the children of the host family but also a so-called Double Placement: In this unique placement arrangement, two exchange students from different countries are accommodated in the same host family. So, what should students expect for their time abroad in this setup?

* Practical Execution:

* Shared living spaces: Both students (either two girls or two boys) share a room and often a bathroom.
* School: Both attend the same school which facilitates their social assimilation.
* Shared activities: They can participate in activities together and support each other.

* Advantages:

* Social support: No one is alone in the host country and can lend each other a hand. Language barriers or homesickness are conquered together.
* Shared experiences: The students both encounter different situations as newcomers and can share their experiences.
* More activities: Automatically, there will be more ideas and activities when there are two of them.

* Disadvantages:

* Personal compatibility: If the two students don't get along well, it may prove stressful.
* Competition: Perhaps the two might compete for the attention of the host family.
* Luck of the draw: A successful double placement also requires a bit of fortune.

Because exchange students are generally outgoing and interesting individuals, they often get along very well. Whether from Peru, Iceland, Germany, or anywhere else, the attitude and objectives of their stays abroad strongly align. And so, they may find the quirks of their host family surprising and amusing in much the same way, despite hailing from different home countries. Equipped with adaptability, the international siblings of a double placement often become fast friends and even get to learn a bit about another culture during their time abroad.

International EXPERIENCE e. V. provides information about the opportunities in various countries during personal conversations with the young people and their parents. Following an introduction, it's often easier to recommend a suitable program that best fits their individual expectations, prerequisites and circumstances. Initial information is available during Online zoom sessions where representatives from school districts, program managers, and returnees explain the daily routine in student exchanges. Dates for these sessions can be found here:
