Analytiqa: Logistics Bulletin: Friday 09th November

11-12-2007 07:10 PM CET | Logistics & Transport

Press release from: Analytiqa

This week's Logistics Bulletin reports on further consolidation amongst logistics providers, with some of Europe's leading players making bolt-on acquisitions. Kuehne + Nagel is continuing the expansion of its overland activities with the acquisition of G.L. Kayser Spediteur seit 1787 and the Cordes & Simon Group. These two major acquisitions will significantly strengthen the Company's network and market position in Germany. In the UK, Wincanton has announced the acquisition of Swales Haulage, a privately owned business, to further strengthen the Group's position in the UK building services market.

Wincanton and Kuehne + Nagel have also reported new business wins this week. Wincanton is expanding co-packing operations, with a five year contract with leading pet food company, Nestlé Purina, whilst Kuehne + Nagel is managing retail logistics for Benetton in Taiwan. Elsewhere, DHL, Thiel Logistik and Expeditors have reported quarterly results, whilst Wincanton has reported interim financials.

Wincanton reports 19.2% growth in underlying H1 profit

08 November - Wincanton has reported its half year results for the six months to 30 September 2007, highlighting that business development momentum in the UK remains strong. Group turnover, at £1,030.2 million, was 10.6% higher than for the same period last year. Underlying operating profit, at £25.5 million, was 19.2% ahead of last year. In a strong first half, the UK & Ireland operations delivered a 17.0% increase in underlying operating profit, to £23.4 million, on turnover up by 16.2% to £668.3 million. Underlying operating profit in Mainland Europe increased from £1.4 million, to £2.1 million on turnover broadly unchanged at £361.9 million.

Looking ahead, Wincanton expects to see the encouraging momentum of its UK & Ireland business continue into the second half. The improved first half performance in Mainland Europe is also expected to be sustained in the second half, although the costs of empty space will continue to limit the speed of profit progress. The second half will again be a very active period for new project implementations, including a new 60,400 m2 multi-temperature site for Sainsbury's in Northampton and an additional 46,450 m2 of warehousing for an automotive customer in Germany. Wincanton expects the full year to be another year of operational and strategic progress, with attractive opportunities for further development, both organically and through acquisition.
