Analytiqa: Logistics Bulletin: Friday 13th July

07-16-2007 09:14 PM CET | Logistics & Transport

Press release from: Analytiqa

This week's Logistics Bulletin reports on M&A activity, contract wins, distribution centre developments, environmental initiatives and key appointments across the supply chain. In M&A news, Itella is expanding in Sweden, Grand Power Logistics has acquired a stake in Hong-Kong based Redcap Logistics, whilst Univar, one of the world’s leading independent distributors of industrial chemicals, is likely to be acquired by CVC Capital Partners.

Elsewhere, in the UK two rather different approaches are being taken to cut road miles from the supply chain. Logistics provider GEFCO has announced it is re-opening a disused rail link between two of its major UK vehicle distribution facilities to replace nearly 2,000 truck journeys per year, whilst grocery retailer Sainsbury's has successfully trialled food deliveries on the River Thames, as it did originally in 1869, to potentially cut 350,000 road kilometres every year.

Primary research with UK retailers by Analytiqa, released as a complimentary White Paper, identifies the environmental benefits and cost savings of a Port-based supply chain strategy and how this is already being adopted across the UK. Analytiqa's White Paper includes case studies of three organisations who have already implemented such a strategy - ASDA, BMB Group, Stiller Group. Sainsbury’s trials food deliveries on the Thames

10 July 2007 - Sainsbury's has trialled a more environmentally-friendly way of delivering food to its stores. The supermarket has recently transported food on the River Thames, as it did originally in 1869.

The journey would mean that once food is dispatched by a Sainsbury's distribution centre in South East London, the day's delivery for the store would be shipped by barge, rather than by road, arriving in close proximity to the west London store. If rolled out to stores in the same area, this could save 350,000 road kilometres every year.

Moving freight to the river could contribute to Sainsbury's new target of reducing CO2 emissions by 25.0% by 2012; outlined along with other tough targets in its corporate responsibility report.

The trial is one of many projects Sainsbury's is exploring to be more energy efficient, particularly in the area of transport and operations, where it aims to reduce the distance its fleet and suppliers travel by 5.0 million kilometres by 2010.

Port of London Authority Chief Executive, Richard Everitt, said: "In recent years, the Thames has been used to move heavy, bulk goods like building materials. Sainsbury's trial was a first, as it tested the potential of the upper river for moving time-sensitive goods. As water freight doesn't face traffic build up, the trial actually showed that freight moves faster on the river than on central London's roads."

The trial, which took place in February, convinced Sainsbury's that the movement of goods on the river Thames between the distribution centre and stores, is a viable option provided the commercial riverside operations can be established. Sainsbury's is committed to working with partners to encourage the development of the wharf infrastructure further.
