“Smart” Solutions for Climbing Safety in Adventure Parks and High Ropes Courses

Europe’s number one climbing park designer implements latest belay technology by leading manufacturers.

WERKHOVEN, THE NETHERLANDS – Providing the appropriate health and safety measures for visitors is one of the aspects operators of commercial climbing facilities need to assess and re-evaluate continuously – not only for insurance purposes.

“Climbing accidents as a result of visitors detaching themselves unintentionally from the safety lines are a climbing park operator’s worse nightmare,” explains Kees-Jan Verwaal, the managing director of the Dutch company Active Constructions (ACS) which designs and builds adventureparks and Aerial Trekking courses for business customers all over Europe. “Particularly, facilities that are still equipped with conventional safety systems based on the Klettersteig technique pose a continuous risk in this respect.”

One of the latest solutions available on the market is the award-winning Smart Belay® system by Germany-based safety equipment specialist Edelrid. “The technology is groundbreaking,” explains Verwaal. “Basically, it’s a system of communicating interconnected carabiners. Means, if one of the carabiners is unlocked or has been detached from the main safety line the other carabiner stays locked until its counterpart has been safely attached to the cable again.”

“The fact that people still have the opportunity to handle belay and carabiners themselves whilst completing a climbing course goes down very well with climbing enthusiasts,” says Verwaal.” Since this provides a genuine and ‘authentic’ climbing experience.”

Another state-of-the-art “smart” belay system which is based on the same principle and which ACS also offers as part of their course layouts is the SAFE-LINK® technology manufactured and distributed by Bornack GmbH Germany.
According to Verwaal, a further advantage of both belay systems is the fact that Smart Belay® and SAFE-LINK® can be easily and cost-effectively retrofitted to existing climbing parks.

“However, the decision which of the safety systems will be installed on a certain course lies entirely with the operator,” confirms Verwaal. “Each of the systems fully complies with all current health and safety regulations, has been tested extensively by independent certification bodies and, thus, ensures the maximum climbing safety of all visitors on any type of course layout.”
