Deadwood Podcast tries to help save Deadwood |

Millions of fans worldwide are outraged and somewhat mystified by the recent decision of HBO to, in effect, end its successful Deadwood series. By failing to renew the contracts of the actors who portray the colorful, often profane, and loosely historically-based inhabitants of the lawless Dakota Territory mining camp, HBO has reversed its previous announcement that there would be a fourth season. Although the network claims that “there has been no decision for the future of the series, and conversations regarding a fourth season are ongoing,” the consensus is that it will be very difficult, if not impossible, to reassemble the ensemble cast. But Deadwood fans are fighting back to save the beloved work of television art by mounting a letter-writing and email campaign to notify HBO that they will cancel their subscriptions at the conclusion of the third season if HBO does not agree to at least a fourth season for the Emmy/Golden Globe/Peabody award-winning show. Season Three of the series begins on June 11, 2006. The town of Deadwood, South Dakota is understandably upset by this news, and although grateful for the attention and publicity generated by the show, its citizens are hopeful that HBO will listen to the voices of Deadwood fans worldwide and grant the show’s creator, David Milch, a fourth season to allow the story line to come to an appropriate and satisfying conclusion. Deadwood resident Paul Dennis, creator and host of The Real Deadwood Podcast, is adding the support of his Internet-based variety show by featuring interviews with HBO Deadwood actors discussing the impact of this decision on their professional and personal lives, and suggesting courses of action to try and reverse HBO’s decision. This effort begins with the recently-released Episode #13, which features W. Earl Brown (Dan Dority), Geri Jewell (Jewel), Ashleigh Kizer (Gem girl Dolly), and Leah Cevoli (Gem girl Leigh). Upcoming shows will continue to feature HBO Deadwood actors responding to this situation until a final decision for the future of the show is reached. A website, savedeadwood.net, created and maintained by concerned fans, provides information and instructions on how to participate in the campaign to rescue the show.
