Singapore, 20 February 2008 – Seventeen Singapore, a publication of SPH Magazines Pte Ltd ("SPH Magazines"), presents The Seventeen Body Peace Treaty as part of its Seventeen Body Peace Project.

Seventeen declares Peace! Most girls are at war with their bodies, berating themselves when they do not meet their imaginary standard of beauty and perfection. “We sometimes blame our bodies for the bad day we’re having; we give up cookies, bread or ice cream after someone passes a negative comment about how we look in our jeans; we compare our bodies to our friends’; we disrespect our bodies by denying them proper nutrition and exercise. At the end of the day, obsessing about our bodies doesn’t just dominate our lives – it’s downright exhausting!" says Sasha Gonzales, Deputy Editor, Seventeen Singapore.

Seventeen recognises this unhealthy fixation. To address the body image crisis that has gripped teenage girls, Seventeen US has launched the Seventeen Body Peace Project. This campaign aims to help girls identify the damaging thought patterns that put them at war with their bodies, so that they can “make peace” with their bodies once and for all.

The Seventeen Body Peace Treaty is a very important component of the yearlong Seventeen Body Peace Project campaign. The aim of the Treaty is to inspire and encourage a positive body image among young girls (see attached image). The creator of this Treaty, Ann Shoket, editor-in-chief of Seventeen US, hopes to garner a million signatures for the Seventeen Body Peace Treaty by the end of the year. Celebrities in the US who have supported the Treaty include Pink, Ciara, Amanda Bynes, Carrie Underwood, Katharine McPhee, Ashlee Simpson, Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas, and Heroes’ Hayden Panettiere.

All 13 of Seventeen’s international editions (including Singapore) have adopted the yearlong Seventeen Body Peace Project campaign. In support of the project, Seventeen Singapore is proud to partner with Singapore General Hospital (SGH) to launch the Seventeen Body Peace Treaty locally during Eating Disorders Awareness Week (EDAW), from February 25 to March 1, 2008. The Seventeen Body Peace Treaty launch, on Monday, February 25 has been scheduled to kickstart EDAW. Local celebrities, Hossan Leong, Jeremy Ratnam from Radio 91.3, Cheryl Miles and Stephanie Carrington, among others, will be present to sign the treaty as a show of support for all it stands for. Thereafter, the treaty will be left on the SGH grounds for members of the public to view. Everyone interested in signing the Treaty can do so online, at www.seventeen.com/body/peace.

The Eating Disorders Awareness Week (EDAW) is an outreach effort started in the USA in 1987 to teach people of all ages the importance of promoting positive body image as well as raising awareness about the dangers of eating disorders and the need for early intervention and treatment. EDAW is also a way for individuals to feel involved and effective in the fight against eating disorders. In addition to educating those at risk for developing eating disorders, each year the campaign reaches thousands of individuals struggling with eating disorders and their loved ones, helping them to access much needed treatment and support. Various events, public forums and workshops will be conducted on the hospital grounds during EDAW to raise awareness of eating disorders and weight and body issues.

As part of the lineup of EDAW events, SPH Magazines will host its Seventeen Perfect Fit workshop on Saturday, March 1, 2008, at the SGH LIFE Centre. Based on the magazine’s very popular Perfect Fit fashion column, the workshop aims to teach girls of all shapes and sizes how to wear the latest trends. Whether they are apple-shaped, flat-chested, pear-shaped or petite, the Seventeen Singapore fashion team will demonstrate how easy it is to pull off the season’s key pieces – and look fabulous doing it!

Singapore, 23 February 2008- Seventeen Singapore's Body Peace Treaty launch, on Monday, February 25 2008, will have a strong celebrity presence, as personalities from the music, television, radio, theatre and sporting worlds band together to declare PEACE!
