After CYNORA GmbH defeated numerous applicants at the Falling Walls Conference in Berlin in November 2013 and received the sought-after "Falling Walls Science Start-up of the Year 2013" award, Dr Tobias Grab, CEO of CYNORA GmbH, has been appointed as a member of the panel for this year's event in order to accompany the decision-making process actively.

Bruchsal - At last year's Falling Walls Conference, CYNORA surpassed several ambitious high-tech companies to win the title of "Falling Walls Science Start-up of the Year 2013". Dr Tobias Grab will experience this year's event from the opposite perspective: as a member of the panel, he will assess the business models of the nominees with reference to such criteria as innovativeness and economic potential. "I am very excited about this new role. To be part of such a high-calibre panel and to have the opportunity to assess the best technology start-ups from a wide variety of countries is a great challenge", says Grab.

Who will be Science Start-up of the Year 2014?
This year, the question being asked again is: "Which are the next walls to fall?". At the Falling Walls venture in Berlin on November 8th, a total of 26 companies will face the panel. The companies were nominated by various foundations and universities from around the world. Following the companies' presentations, the high-calibre panel will select the most innovative candidates. On November 9th, three finalists will have the unique opportunity to present their business models to a prominent group of approximately 600 guests at the Falling Walls Conference. The highlight of the event is the award ceremony, when the title of "Falling Walls Science Start-up of the Year 2014" will be granted.

A history-steeped event
Since the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9th 2009, top researchers from around the world have met in the German capital to bring together scientific breakthroughs with representatives of politics, business, the media and culture as part of the Falling Walls Conference. The event's objective is to highlight innovative solutions to global challenges such as the climate, health, diet, energy and safety. This year's event takes place on the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The award as a springboard
"For the CYNORA team and the company's supporters, the award in 2013 was a major confirmation of the commitment that we invest in our work every day", says Dr Tobias Grab. CYNORA is a company based in Bruchsal close to Karlsruhe, Germany. It’s focus is making Singlet Harvesting Technology available for use in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). This technology enables efficient display and lighting systems while avoiding dependence on rare materials, e.g. iridium. To ensure broad-based application in OLEDs, CYNORA adapts the materials for solution processing; this in turn increases both resource and cost efficiency in manufacturing.

The team at CYNORA currently numbers 34, most of whom are involved in research and development. Research encompasses all key aspects of developing optoelectronic materials, including quantum mechanical calculation and synthesis, as well as analytics and testing of materials in OLED prototypes. This broad approach enables CYNORA to explore and validate a wide array of OLED design concepts, e.g. hybrid and multilayered components of solutions based on an innovative crosslinking technology.

The concerted efforts of the people at CYNORA and the company’s supporters have resulted in over 200 patent applications and several coveted scientific and industrial awards, most recently the “Falling Walls Science Startup of the Year 2013”.
