Speculum humanae salvationis (Das ist der spiegel menschlicher behaltnuß mit den Evangelien und Epistelen durch das ganzt Jar). 1489. Estimate: ? 25.000

Hamburg, 24 September 2009, (kk) - It can be yours, for € 25.000, the almost complete copy in an old coloring of the very rare “Sepculum humanae salvationis“. The fifth German edition of the so-called “spiegels menschlicher behaltnuß“, with some 272 woodcuts in the text, is a highlight in our upcoming Hamburg auction of Rare Books - Manuscripts - Autographs - Decorative Prints with Marine and North German Art.

You can also reach for the stars for just € 9.000, which is the estimate for the very rare first illustrated edition of the “Poeticon astronomicon“ by Gaius Julius Hyginus, from 1482. This famous book, published by Erhard Ratdoldt in Venice, contains a presentation of the constellation that was relevant for centuries.

Another special treat, not only for experts of botany, will be Johann Wilhelm Weinmann‘s work “Phytanthosa-Iconographia“ in four volumes. Ten years ago, a copy of the first edition of this complete and very well-preserved baroque book on plants and flowers was auctioned off by Ketterer Kunst with quite some success. It then achieved proceeds of € 123.000, whereas, with a little bit of luck, this copy could be obtained for € 60.000.

The entries in the “Album amicorum“ are the Who is Who of the late 16th century. This magnificently illustrated nobility friendship album of Johann von Bassen contains, among others, entries by Augustus the Younger, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, founder of the Bibliotheca Augusta in Wolfenbüttel, by Dodo von Innhausen, an important commander in the Thirty Years' War and by the mathematician and astronomer Conrad Dasypodius. The estimate for this book with four figurative watercolors and eight armorial watercolors is at € 5.000.

The lineup is completed with the “Triumph Wagen Antimonii“ by Basilius Valentinus, which will be called up with an estimate of € 6.000, as well as with books by Blackwell, F. Buonanni, J. de Gheyn and C. Thomas.

Besides Rare Books, Manuscripts, Autographs and Decorative Prints, this auction also comprises works of Marine and North German Art .

A prestigious captain’s painting is definitely going to make for some excitement in the auction room. The picture “Hamburger Dampfsegler "Rhodos" auf Fahrt in die Türkei” (Hamburg Steamer Sailing to Turkey) by John Henry Mohrmann will be called up with an estimate of € 3.500-4.500.

An oil painting by Johannes Holst might be obtained for the same price. His “Vollschiff auf schwerer See“ (Full Rigged Ship on Rough Sea) from 1950 draws the beholders‘ attention to the ship under full sails running on long waves, a lot of details on its deck can be seen because of the sails‘ heeling. Holst attains an accurate depiction of the gray blue sea under a cloudy sky in a characteristical manner.

Works by Karl Josef Müller, Jakob Petersen, Carl Saltzmann and Julius Teophil Wentscher will complete the range of Marine Art, representatives of North German Art are Heinrich Blunck, Thomas Herbst and Ernst Eitner.
