Climate Star 2009 - Short Track to Climate Protection
With immediate effect all cities, municipalities and districts in Europe can apply with their climate protection projects for a Climate Star 2009. “Short Track to Climate Protection” is the theme of this year’s European award for local climate protection activities.
For the forth time, the European city network Climate Alliance is inviting all local authorities in whole Europe to present their measures, campaigns and activities and apply for a Climate Star. Ulrike Janssen, Director of Climate Alliance, points out that “the local level is very important to reassure the European and the international level in aiming for and reaching ambitious climate protection targets”. Cities and municipalities as lowest political level are in close contact with the population and therefore they are essential stakeholders to limit the global climate change with local measures.
Dr. Stephan Pernkopf, member of the government of the federal state of Lower Austria, which traditionally organises the award ceremony, would be pleased about many participating cities and municipalities: “The Climate Star fits to the climate protection programme 2009 - 2012 of Lower Austria with its focus on renewable energies and its stronger concentration on municipalities”.
In this year the application forms for the Climate Star are reworked and a great many easier to fill in. Until now they are available in English and German; further languages will follow. Closing date for applications is 15 June 2009.

The “Climate Alliance of European Cities with Indigenous Rainforest Peoples” is a city network with 1400 European local authorities in 17 countries, that have entered into a partnership with indigenous rainforest peoples - united by the common concern for the global climate. By adhering, the cities and municipalities commit to an ambitious target: to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 10 percent every five years, with the important milestone of halving per capita emissions at the latest by 2030 (base year 1990).
