Press release from: Manipal Institute of Regenerative Medicine

/ PR Agency: brand-comm
Manipal Institute of Regenerative Medicine (MIRM) of Manipal University has launched a short term course on Application of Flow Cytometry and Molecular Biology Techniques in Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine for those specializing in Life Sciences as a profession.

Starting from 26th December 2008 till 5th January 2009, the 10-day course will include regular classes from 9.00 AM to 6.00 PM at Manipal Institute of Regenerative Medicine, Bangalore. The lectures will deal with history, types of stem cells, their derivation, characterization, differentiation and therapeutic applications/ implications including the legal and ethical issues surrounding stem cell research in India. Lab sessions will deal with characterization of embryonic and adult (mesenchymal) stem cells using Flow Cytometry and molecular biology tools RT-PCR and quantitative RT-PCR.

Candidates with a Masters degree in Life Sciences or B. E. in Biotechnology will be preferred for this course. However, candidates with a Bachelors degree are also encouraged to apply. Basic knowledge regarding molecular biology and immune techniques is essential to undertake this training.

Admissions for the course are currently open. The last date to apply for the course is 12th December 2008. For more details on the program and admission procedures:

Send a CV along with a letter of recommendation to
Dr. Kanchan Sarda,
Assistant Course Co-ordinator,
Manipal Institute of Regenerative Medicine,
#10, Service Road, Domlur 560071
Please super scribe the letters “ESC MSC WET WORKSHOP” in the letter.

Alternatively you can email the documents to kanchan.sarda@manipal.edu with letters “ESC MSC WET WORKSHOP” in the subject line, or call +91 80 2535661 or 99450 18686 between 9.00 AM and 5.00 PM.

Applications received will be scrutinized by a selection team and the selected candidates will be informed by 16th December 2008.

MIRM has instituted this course to enable students to establish a system for the identification and characterization of stem cells which would be at par with international standards. Apart from this, it would also update their knowledge regarding the global status of stem cell research. Students of this course would bring in a blend of world class academic training and industry practices.

The labs at the Manipal Institute of Regenerative Medicine are fully equipped with all the latest instruments required for basic as well as advanced analyses for stem cell biology such as Flow Cytometer, quantitative/Real Time PCR machine, live cell imaging system with a state-of-the-art cell culture facility.

“Stem Cell Research is in its infancy in India and is expected to grow very rapidly. Emerging industry segments of Biotechnology and Clinical Research Organizations throw up multitude opportunities for well trained post graduate students. Opportunities for students also exist in organizations like Stempeutics, Avesthagen, Reliance, which focus on stem cell therapies and/or drug screening using stem cells. MIRM is the only institute in India dedicated to pursue education as well as research in the field of regenerative medicine and stem cell biology.” said Dr. Pawan Gupta, Dean, Manipal Institute of Regenerative Medicine.

“Understanding the principles and data analysis of FACS helps in designing experiments like studying the expression of surface markers which are the characteristic of stem cells, while molecular biology tools are important for gene manipulation and to understand mechanisms at the molecular level. Knowledge of these techniques is essential for students planning a long-term career in science” said Dr Sathees C. Raghavan, Scientist Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore.

“Regenerative medicine is a rapidly emerging area of bio-medical research with enormous therapeutic potential. It is estimated that the Global market for Stem Cell therapies is expected to reach $20 billion by 2010. Adult Stem Cell therapy currently dominates the Global Stem Cells Market with a share of almost 58%. There are almost 180 prominent stem cell companies in the world. There is a growing consensus, amongst the policy analysts and scientists alike, that India is likely to play a key role in the scientific, clinical and commercial development of stem cell research. Market potential for stem cell therapies product in India and Asia-Pacific is very large. As the academic research base broadens and industry begins to adapt the new technologies, the demand for skills in this area will rapidly increase, resulting in excellent opportunities for scientists and students with training in this area.” said B N Manohar, President Stempeutics Research Pvt. Ltd, Bangalore.

“Stem cell biology, a fascinating innovative scientific natural product is knocking at the doors as adjuvant Medicine likely to be introduced into the therapeutic armamentarium for treating difficult to treat chronic diseases that has so far defied realms of available allopathic medication. The awareness, comprehension and conviction of stem cell biology that stems from such programs, an understanding of the isolation and production of stem cells will go a long way in leading from the front towards using this cutting edge technology for the benefit of the suffering humanity and usher in its clinical application” said Dr Ramanada S. Nadig, President & Deputy Dean, Clinical Research, Education and Management Academy, Bangalore.
