(openPR) - Advanced FOTA Solution to Support Mobile Devices Running on Linux-Based Operating Systems
FRAMINGHAM, MA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 11/30/2005 -- Red Bend Software (www.redbend.com), the leading provider of firmware over-the-air (FOTA) update solutions for mobile devices, today announced it has joined MontaVista Software´s Mobilinux Open Framework partner program. Red Bend has demonstrated its advanced FOTA solution on the Linux operating system, and membership in the Mobilinux Open Framework program helps to ensure that Red Bend´s solution is optimized for deployment on Linux-based mobile phones.
MontaVista´s Mobilinux Open Framework program assists handset vendors that are migrating from proprietary operating system platforms to Linux. Best-of-breed mobile software vendors are encouraged to port their product offerings to MontaVista´s Linux Operating System and develop integrated solutions atop leading semiconductor platforms. These pre-integrated solutions offer a base design that can reduce risk and accelerate the development of a complete product.
The market for Linux-based phones is growing quickly. According to industry researchers, Linux phones accounted for 26% of the smartphone market in Q2 2005, compared to 6% a year earlier. Several large handset manufacturers and operators are successfully selling Linux-based phones in volume in Asia, with plans to expand into other markets.
Red Bend has established itself as the market-leading provider of FOTA update solutions for mobile devices. Red Bend´s customers, including BenQ Mobile (formerly Siemens Mobile), LG Electronics, Sharp, and Sony Ericsson account for more than 50% of the global handset market.
"We have seen a growing demand for Linux-based mobile phones, and recognize Mobilinux as an important platform," said Yoram Salinger, president and CEO of Red Bend. "Through our work with MontaVista´s world-class Linux platform and the Mobilinux Open Framework, we are in an excellent position to deploy our FOTA solutions to new Linux-based phones as they come to market."
Linux is becoming the strategic platform of choice for many handset vendors and operators who require a stable, flexible and open platform to build their mobile devices," said Peder Ulander, vice president of marketing at MontaVista Software. "The broad industry support of Linux from leading wireless technology providers, including Red Bend, will help to accelerate the deployment of Linux-based mobile phones. FOTA technology, such as that from Red Bend, is now recognized as vital to a robust mobile operating system environment."
