SMIITY guides citizens and tourists through the Levadas of Madeira
Levada of 25 Fontes.
The purpose is that the centuries-old species that make up the Laurissilva forest, unique in this part of the globe, "communicate" with tourists and explorers, transporting the Internet of Things (IoT) concept to a wild, rich and almost untouched environment.
To this end, SMIITY provides Madeira residents and tourists with contextualized information that guides users along the way, giving them some notes about the geological wealth, fauna and flora typical of the island, through interaction with Beacons, installed at various points in the trail that interact with user's mobile device.
It should be noted that these trails can be consulted offline, once they’re downloaded, since the interaction is done via Bluetooth Low Energy.
SMIITY is already available in the Levadas of the 25 Fontes, the Rabaçal and the Caldeirão Verde.
In Madeira there are about 200 Levadas, and the network reaches an extension of approximately 3,100 km, of which about 80 are in tunnels, crossing and traveling throughout the island. As for the recommended routes, there are already 28 in Madeira and 2 in Porto Santo.
It should also be mentioned that 800 km of the main canals of the Levadas of Madeira, including the Rabaçal and the 25 Fontes, are candidates for World Heritage of Humanity.
