The school is situated in the heart of the old town of Tropea in a beautiful building from the 18th century.

In 1993 the Italian language school in Tropea was founded originally as the Caffè Italiano Club. Then, in 2004, the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research Department officially recognised the school as an accredited Italian language school and the name was changed to the Piccola Università Italiana. The Piccola Università Italiana is one of the few certified Italian language schools in Italy and the only certified language school in Calabria. Our mission statement is to immerse the student/vacationer, as much as possible, into southern Italian culture to facilitate the acquisition of Italian reading, writing and speaking skills under the tutelage of qualified native Italian speakers.

Each year, the Piccola Università Italiana serves close to 500 people participating in approximately 150 Italian courses. The students come from all over the world and range in age from 18 to 85. The average age of our course participants is around 38 years.

Fifteen years of experience guarantee professionalism in every detail. Our Ministry of Education certified courses are tailored to meet the individual needs of each student. Therefore, class size is limited from 3 to 6 students encompassing 11 language course levels.

The Italian language courses provide a range of interesting and varied activities. Our teachers are well qualified native speakers and hold degrees in Italian literature and/or language. Language course material consists of an Italian textbook and articles from various relevant sources including Italian newspapers. For a more detailed description of our Italian courses, please contact the secretary’s office.
Supplemental activities include guided historical tours of Tropea and Italian cinema evenings.

The Piccola Università Italiana is situated in the heart of the old town of Tropea, a charming medieval town right by the sea. Tropea lies on the same latitude as the famous Aeolian Islands. Italians affectionately refer to Tropea as the “Pear of Calabria”. Tropea was built on a 42 m high rock and never fails to charm everyone with its romantic, winding streets. Here you find unspoilt natural landscapes with lush green vegetation, forming a magnificent contrast with the turquoise crystal-clear water of the sea.

The staff at the Piccola Università Italiana will arrange pleasant accommodations during your stay and will arrange transfers to and from Lamezia Terme airport or the train station, the cost of which is included in the enrolment fee. If required, the language school is also pleased to help with flight bookings.

In addition to Italian language courses, the Piccola Università provides a variety of cultural, social and sporting extracurricular activities during leisure time to make your stay even more enjoyable.

Our weekly cultural programs include guided excursions to points of particular interest in Calabria and Sicily or to Campania to see the ancient ruins at Pompeii. In addition, we organize classical music concerts at school, motorboat trips, hikes in the Aspromonte mountain range, mountain bike excursions, horseback riding on the beach, dining and musical entertainment provided by local musicians and much, much more. During the summer months, you many choose to spend your leisure time just swimming and sunbathing on the pristine white sandy beaches gently kissed by a warm, turquoise coloured sea.

Whatever your preference, it is a perfect way to combine work and pleasure.
