(openPR) - Boston (USA), Oldenburg (Germany), 4. July 2008. “Claims granted for a medicinal product, even a traditional one, must be clearly differentiated against claims for food supplements and must be more valuable.” This was the view put forward by Dr. Rainer Kolkmann of the pharmaceutical service provider Diapharm (diapharm.com) on Wednesday 25 June at the Annual Meeting of the Drug Information Association in Boston, USA. Only if the authorities approve robust claims for traditional herbal medicines, manufacturers are prepared to invest in safety and quality standards for medicinal products. Otherwise, these products tend to be sold as differently valued food supplements.
Diapharm supports pharmaceutical companies in the development and market launch of medicinal products, medical devices and food supplements. About a third of the total of 30 registrations of traditional herbal medicines in Europe were obtained with the help of Diapharm.
The DIA Annual Meeting is the largest meeting of drug developers, manufacturers and supervisory bodies in the world. Over 8,000 researchers, entrepreneurs and representatives of the authorities met from 20 to 25 June 2008 in Boston. The spectrum of subjects covered in the presentations and tutorials ranged from preclinical to pharmacovigilance. Diapharm was represented at the meeting with two presentations: apart from Dr. Kolkmann (Oldenburg), the organisers had also invited another Diapharm partner, Dr. Leonardo Ebeling (Hamburg). He spoke to delegates on the medical evaluation and safety testing of herbal medicines, borderline products and medical devices. The pharma service provider Diapharm, with offices in Hamburg, Lübeck, Münster and Oldenburg, supports pharmaceutical companies in their applications for marketing authorisations for medicinal and related products and helps them to keep up to date with regulatory requirements.
