ARDIN Launches 2026 Malta Summer School on Interactive Digital Narrative and AI
Five-day intensive training programme at St. Martin's Institute of Higher Education, Malta, equips professionals and researchers to communicate complexity using cutting-edge AI and storytelling tools.MALTA, 6-10 JULY 2026 - The Association for Research in Digital Interactive Narratives (ARDIN) is pleased to announce the ARDIN Malta Summer School 2026 (AMSS2026), a five-day intensive training programme taking place 6-10 July 2026 at St. Martin's Institute of Higher Education in Malta. The programme will train participants to harness Interactive Digital Narratives (IDN) and the latest generative AI tools to make complex subjects accessible and engaging.
ABOUT THE PROGRAMME
AMSS2026 brings together leading experts in IDN, storytelling, cultural heritage, and artificial intelligence for an immersive learning experience unlike any conventional academic conference or workshop. Over five days, participants will take part in 40 hours of expert-led instruction, guided visits to Malta's extraordinary Neolithic archaeological sites, and hands-on group activities developing their own IDN prototype using generative AI tools.
The programme is conducted entirely in English and is structured around an incremental design challenge: represent a complex topic, using cultural heritage as the concrete project. Each day's instruction and cultural site visit feeds directly into the iterative development of a participant-led IDN prototype. Attended sites include the National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta, the Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Archaeological Complex, and the Tarxien Neolithic Complex - among the oldest free-standing structures on Earth.
CREDENTIALS AND ACADEMIC CREDIT
Upon completion, all participants earn the ARDIN Expert in Complexity Representation certificate. The programme awards 2 ECTS credits through on-site instruction, readings, cultural visits, and group activities, or 3 ECTS credits for participants who additionally submit a written follow-up report. The core reading for the programme is Hartmut Koenitz's Understanding Interactive Digital Narrative: Immersive Expressions for a Complex Time (Routledge, 2023).
EXPERT TRAINERS
The summer school brings together a faculty of internationally recognised experts. Confirmed trainers include Jonathan Barbara (Senior Lecturer, St. Martin's Institute), Hartmut Koenitz (Professor Södertörn University), Mirjam Palosaari Eladhari (Associate Professor Stockholm University) and Lissa Holloway-Attaway (Associate Professor University of Skövde) who will cover core themes including systems thinking, IDN design for complexity, artificial intelligence in interactive narratives, cultural heritage representation, and the use of generative AI tools in project development.
