Press release from: Envolve Health

The heart is arguably the most important organ in your body. Keeping it healthy is a vital component to your overall health and wellbeing. In honor the heart-filled holiday of Valentine’s Day, the health experts at Envolve, an integrated healthcare solutions company, are pleased to share a few habits to keep your heart in tip-top shape.

1. Eat Your Heart Out. Incorporate heart healthy foods into your daily diet. Fish high in omega-3s such as salmon, trout and tuna are good salad or dinner additions. Sub out your regular snacks for some berries, walnuts or almonds. Be sure to treat yourself to a glass of red wine and a small serving of dark chocolate, which are also good for the heart!

2. Get a Move On. The American Heart Association promotes a minimum of 20-30 minutes of daily exercise to help prevent cardiovascular disease. Take a walk or take a workout class, just be sure to take action!

3. Relax. Stress directly effects your cholesterol and blood pressure levels, both of which are contributors to cardiovascular disease. Stress can cause you to make unhealthy choices from overeating to inactivity. Implement some stress management techniques when you feel overwhelmed such as meditation, list-making, exercising or yoga to help calm your mind and protect your heart.

4. Stand Up. Movement helps your blood flow, which in turn, keeps your heart pumping. Even if you have a “desk job,” print to a further machine, stand and stretch periodically, request a standing desk, or schedule time on your calendar for a walk around the block.

5. Quit Smoking. Smoking damages blood vessels by lowering good cholesterol, decreasing blood flow and causing high blood pressure. So listen to your heart and quit! Just one year of not smoking decreases your chance of heart disease and stroke by half.
