San Pedro Theatre Company Names Chip Colvin as Music Director

Chip Colvin, Pianist has joined The Relevant Stage as Music Director. Colvin is known locally in San Pedro for his brilliant work with the Golden State Pops Orchestra.

Colvin was born and raised in Houston, TX. He moved to LA two and a half years ago to begin attending USC as a master’s student in the Keyboard Collaborative Arts program studying with Alan Smith. He has extensive experience as a pianist, coach, teacher, music director, and singer.

Colvin has worked on musicals such as The Last Five Years, Bye Bye Birdie, Into the Woods, Honk!, Bat Boy, City of Angels, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, The Secret Garden, The Cradle Will Rock, and Hello Dolly and operas such as Cosí fan Tutte, Gianni Schicchi, Le Nozze de Figaro, Señor Deluso, and Trouble in Tahiti.

Colvin has also played Beethoven’s 2nd Piano Concerto as a soloist with the Houston Civic Symphony and been employed as choral/orchestral conductor for works such as Michael W. Smith’s Agnus Dei and John Rutter’s Gloria.

“Although our next production is a non-musical play (Over There/Over Here by Michael Reyes) it is important now to begin planning for our two, back-to-back musicals in the summer and fall, Urinetown the Musical and Batboy the Musical.” States Artistic Director, Ray Buffer. He adds, “I will stage direct Urinetown, and Lucas Pakes who directed our inaugural season premiere production of Acts of Desperation, will take the reins for Bat Boy. We both look forward to collaborating with Chip, and bringing the best possible live performances to San Pedro.”

Urinetown The Musical opens July 31, 2008 and Bat Boy The Musical open October 9, 2008. All performances will be at the 1500-seat Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro, California.
