MNAA’s art "comes to life" with SMIITY
Lisbon, December 13th 2016: Visiting the National Museum of Ancient Art (MNAA) in Lisbon becomes a more enriching experience for citizens and tourists with SMIITY. Through interaction with beacons (iBeacon and Google Eddystone), works of art come to life on mobile devices.From room to room, visitors are getting information on the works displayed at MNAA on their smartphone, tablet or Apple Smartwatch. Instead of a physical guide that tells the origins and meanings inherent to the pieces, they themselves tell their stories to the SMIITY user.
In order to make this experience, still in the implementation phase, beacons were distributed in several points of the museum, as is the case of the Panels of São Vicente. The user will then receive notifications with the multimedia information of a particular work, being able to choose the language in which he wants to visualize it.
The goal is not only to enrich the visitor culturally, but also to give him a dynamic, interactive and differentiating experience compared to other museums. SMIITY can, therefore, be a complement to the visits, be these individual or groups of students, for example.
Also note that SMIITY uses integration with Apple Siri and Google Speech Recognizer. This feature allows the user to convert texts into audio files, so he doesn’t need to read the descriptions of the works that interest: he just has to put the headphones and enjoy the pieces of art while listening to the explanation, also in his language. A tool that may prove to be equally useful for visitors with visual impairments.
